I have been waiting for REPUBLICAN to reappear after his chase run at Warwick because nothing went right for him on that seasonal debut, and he was almost dragged off the course by a runner who veered left and nearly put him through a rail. He was very green at his first few flights (third start over fences), but he was warming to the task the further they went.
He was always going to be inconvenienced by his hold up position at the rear of the field, given the slow gallop they went. He was much better than the bare result, and from that race, the second and third both came out to score next time in very good style. On the balance of his hurdle form, he is better than this mark of 120, and he sneaks in here at the top of the weights.

FINAWN BAWN – (2.20 Southwell, 0.5pt each-way – 12/1)
A chance is taken with FINAWN BAWN, who was once a very useful hurdler finishing placed in a Grade 2 event and twice a winner over hurdles at Bangor and Huntingdon in 2018/2019. He has clearly had his issues, having had 749 days off the track before his latest run over fences, where he jumped poorly.
With that under his belt and this switch back to hurdling, he could prove a different proposition. Connections stick on the first time headgear, and he is completely unexposed with arguably the strongest form on offer. He is worth an each-way play for a trainer that has a 38% strike rate at this venue.

HURRICANE MITCH – (3.20 Southwell, 1pt win – 8/1)
HURRICANE MITCH caught the eye travelling strongly in a contest at Exeter that has worked out well, but he failed to get home on his first start for 351 days, and he is entitled to improve on that effort back down in trip.
Connections gave him a wind operation in June, and now they stick first-time cheek-pieces on to sharpen him up. He is unexposed after just the one start in a handicap, and he could have plenty more to offer off of this lowly mark of 102.
