.DRAKES WELL – (2.35 Southwell, 2pts win 4/1)
There are some nice horses in here for handicaps down the line so its worth keeping an eye on this race but DRAKES WELL should take some stopping on the back of his excellent reappearance effort at Fontwell.
That was his first start for 340 days and first for this yard so improvement can be expected and despite going off at big odds on the pick of his Point form it wasn’t a surprise to see him involved at the finish.
The eight-year-old was caught late on after setting useful fractions on the front end by one that was conservatively ridden in midfield. That form is very useful in the context of this race so he should be very hard to peg back.

.SHADY OAKS – (2.45 Wetherby, 0.5pts each-way 17/2)
This is a woeful race but maiden SHADY OAKS has been knocking on the door over trips too far of late and he ran an encouraging race at Southwell over this trip behind Glajou in a Class 3 contest off a 6lb higher mark in between.
A repeat of that effort will be enough to suffice in this contest so now on a career low mark and back in class 5 company over the correct trip and on a sounder surface he is worth siding with to capitalise at an each way place

.OPINE – (3.40 Southwell, 1pt win 3/1)
OPINE has not offered much under pressure but there is a good chance that his recent wind surgery and the fitting of the first time tongue-tie can help him see things out in a stronger fashion.
The four-year-old receives a nice weight allowance here and has the help of Kevin Brogan’s claim and on handicap debut off this lowly mark of 104 after just three starts over hurdles he is open to significant improvement. He has shown that there is ability there by running well in two races that have clocked good time figures so a chance is taken.

.PAY THE PIPER – (4.20 Wetherby 1pt win 11/4)
This is a good race but PAY THE PIPER is so unexposed after just two starts he has to be the percentage call especially given the bare form of his two runs in very good time figures make him look thrown in off this opening handicap mark of 129.
This 2m on good to soft ground looks the bare minimum for him but his Sedgefield win was franked by the second who bolted up by 18 lengths in a maiden hurdle next time and was given a 13lb rise by the handicapper to a mark of 128.
The selection comfortably held him at that venue before running down the useful 135-rated Castel Rushen who wasn’t disgraced when third behind My Drogo at Kelso on Saturday in the Premier Novices’ Hurdle. In both of those runs he has shown a good attitude and he gets the vote over Shantou Express who takes a drop in grade but a mark of 134 looks lofty on handicap debut on the bare form of his hurdle wins this term.
Haafapiece will be popular but the race he looked set to go close in at Cheltenham before coming down has worked out poorly and his stamina was stretched in a good time figure here previously so may not be the good thing back at Wetherby.
