STAY COUL (3.15 Yarmouth, 1pt each-way 13/2)
Very few of these have proven they can handle soft ground, so in the hope, conditions don’t dry out too much, a chance is given to STAY COUL.
The amount of money for him at Windsor last time is hard to ignore, and although it was a disappointing display on the whole, the race simply wasn’t run to suit at a stop-start gallop in which the winner dictated. That was a tough task being held up in that race, and it didn’t help that he was keen early on.
He was a very easy winner at Leicester last season in which the runner up is now 11lbs higher, and the third is 20lbs higher, and it was an eye-catching run at Sandown in a race that has worked out really well on his second start this season. He is only 3lb higher than that Leicester run and is 1lb lower than his Sandown effort, so he looks well treated on balance and has conditions to suit today.

ALBEGONE (2.55 Goodwood, 1pt win 5/2)
There is a few to like in here, including some course specialists, but it’s hard to get away from the claims of ALBEGONE. He has improved leaps and bounds for the fitting of the blinkers, and on the evidence of his last three starts, he has more to offer yet.
He did best of those on the wrong side of the track when second at Redcar last time on a day when all of the winners came far side. The only horse to have raced in a similar position (7th) has come out and won next time as has one that filled the runner-up spot from a similar track position in another race, so his effort is worth upgrading.
He looks to have a good bit in hand of the handicapper still off of this mark, has won on soft ground and over course and distance in impressive style. He looks like a three-year-old very much on the up so he gets the vote.

MISHAL STAR (7.00 Kempton, 2pts win 5/1)
I’ve been waiting a long time for MISHAL STAR to run in a handicap and today is her handicap debut off of this mark of 90. She has had two runs on the all-weather – an impressive victory here at Kempton by four lengths and a blocked run in a race in which she would have taken the scalp of Happy Romance at Chelmsford in a Listed event off a 181-day break.
If she were to meet Happy Romance on these terms, she would be in receipt of 21lb and the second that day was Chocoya, who is rated 98. She has had some tough tasks since that run. She was 4th behind Creative Forces at Newbury (reversed form with Happy Romance) in a Listed race and then suffered a wound on her right leg when sixth at Sandown in a Listed race behind Atalis Bay which can be easily forgiven.
She ran an excellent race on her latest outing against the track bias at Naas behind Wren’s Breath to finish fourth, doing best of those on the far side of the track. Dickiedooda and Russian River were both behind the selection from that side of the track and are rated 96 and 95.
I would be shocked if she didn’t have at least 5lbs in hand of the handicapper here, and the switch back to the all-weather looks an excellent move by connections for this handicap debut.
