PRIDE OF AMERICA – (2.25 Newbury, 0.5pt e/w 9/1
A chance is taken on handicap debutant PRIDE OF AMERICA who probably won’t want too much rain but has certainly been handed a chance by the handicapper off an opening mark of 89. He was unlucky not to win on debut at Wolverhampton when denied a clear run and finished on the bridle. The front three from that race have competed in all the top handicaps this season and are rated 87, 88, 87 as well as the fifth rated 81. On his final start as a two-year-old he bolted up at the same venue next time by 5 lengths and although that form is nothing to shout about it was impressive. He returned this term with a solid run in the Lingfield Derby Trial but failed to see out that longer trip and probably was wanting for fitness. He then went to France to finish second in a Conditions race on soft ground (despite what the racing post will tell you). He is unexposed and none of these look to have too much mileage in their handicap marks and providing the ground still has good in the going description he should make his presence felt.

HIGHFIELD PRINCESS – (2:50 Doncaster, 0.5pt e/w 12/1
It’s probably not wise to throw stacks of cash at a race of this nature but HIGHFIELD PRINCESS has improved with each start and she looks well treated on the balance off an opening mark of 57 and she is receiving lumps of weight from all bar one. She caught the eye at Redcar on debut when denied a clear passage in a good race but despite that everything bar one horse is rated higher than her. At Thirsk next time she hung right off the bend forfeiting ground and failed to handle the undulating home straight but was still only three lengths off today’s rival Artistic Vision rated 63. On her latest start she caught the eye again under very careful handling at Redcar finishing fourth, the winner rated 85 and won by 8 lengths but today’s rival Pattaya (63) was only two lengths ahead and given Jason Heart didn’t use his stick its likely she would have finished closer to that one. The fifth was rated 81 and the sixth went close for our column on Friday off an opening handicap mark off 62. She is worth chancing in an open event.

CLINICIAN – (4.25 Newmarket, 1.5pts win 7/2
CLINICIAN makes her handicap debut after showing up well over course and distance in a Novice contest on seasonal reappearance and that has the makings of some strong form. She finished fifth without being knocked about in the closing stages but did the best of those on the front end of the pace outside of the impressive winner. She was beaten six lengths but kept on and showed a willing attitude and this switch to handicaps should see her in a better light. The form of that race has worked out well with the second running the potentially useful Bizzi Lizzi close next time and she has been handed an opening mark of 80. The third won next time and is rated 88, the fourth won next time and has been given a mark of 84 so the opening mark of the selection of 75 should prove workable given how the race panned out.

SURREY PRIDE – (4.45 Newbury, 1pt e/w 11/2
SURREY PRIDE wasn’t seen to best effect for this column last time at Sandown when running on late from an unpromising position but he is worth another chance back up in trip to 1m2f off a 1lb lower mark. Connections have switched out jockey Charles Bishop for David Probert and a more prominent ride this time should see him to better effect. His form from last term as a two-year-old warrants plenty of respect and on reflection of his Haydock run on seasonal reappearance, its likely he needed the run it rather than being undone by the deep Haydock ground but even so his action suggests that he wouldn’t want this to turn into a soft ground bog.

BRIGHT START – 5.20 Newbury, 1pt win 9/4
A rare bet in a Maiden for me but BRIGHT START made just that when chasing home subsequent winner Star Of Wins on debut and was short of room in the closing stages. That was an excellent effort conceding race course experience to two horses who are rated in the 80’s and the front three pulled six lengths clear of the field. This stamina test of 1m4f should really suit and now race fit he looks a potentially useful colt going forward and left a deep enough impression on debut to have a bet in a contest of this nature.

NEW CHAPTER – 5.40 Doncaster, 2pts win 7/2
This is a good race but NEW CHAPTER is the one who makes most appeal on this quick switch to handicap company off what looks a lenient mark of 79. He has improved with each start and relished the step up in trip at Ayr last time running out a very cosy winner giving the impression that connections have targeted this route. On debut at Yarmouth he caught the eye behind Magical Morning (97) when slowly away from the stalls and given far too much to do over 1m. It was a similar story next time at Windsor but the pace in the race held up and he was the only one able to come with some sort of challenge to be beaten just 2l. This is a tougher race today but there is surely more to come.
