KING OF THE CASTLE – (14:25 York, 2.5pts win – 8/1)
KING OF THE CASTLE is the sole runner for Aidan O’Brien on Saturday at York, and he has a strong chance off of this handicap mark of 96 to dispel of this field. He dropped back into a Maiden last time to score impressively for a confidence booster and has been better than the bare result on his last two starts when fitted with the cheek-pieces.
His penultimate start at Down Royal on handicap debut in the Ulster Derby saw him denied a clear run around the home bend and then have to switch wide to come with a late burst down the outside to finish second. His stablemate Iowa was well-positioned and running off a handicap mark of 79 and is now 19lbs higher in the handicap, so given the selection tried to give him 12lbs, it was a huge effort. The third is now 12lbs higher in the handicap while the fourth is yet to run, but the fifth and sixth both scored next time out and are 4lbs and 5lbs higher in the handicap, and the eighth was only touched off in listed company next time.
He gave a lot of weight to all bar the final mentioned, and he is only 5lbs higher here. Previous to that run, he did far too much too soon at Leopardstown but was only caught late by recent Group 2 Great Voltigeur runner-up The Mediterranean (109), and he stuck on strongly at the finish for one that did so much early on. As a two-year-old, he wasn’t beaten far by over a trip too short of 1m by Roman Empire (111) when catching the eye finishing strongly. The step-up in trip today in this company will see him to best effect, he won’t mind any rain that falls, and he surely has to go close off of this mark.

INDIGO GIRL – (14:40 Sandown, 1pt wn – 11/4)
I have to side with INDIGO GIRL here. This is not a strong race, and her form as a two-year-old is solid, and her return run at Ascot was a step in the right direction despite her being very keen and fresh early on. Encouragement can be taken by her galloping to the line, and now race fit, she should settle a bit better.
She was one of the top two-year-old fillies last season and is well clear on ratings here. At the prices, it’s worth chancing she has trained on, and this is her easiest task to date.

SKY DEFENDER – (15:15 Sandown, 1pt win – 12/1)
SKY DEFENDER has fallen in the handicap but has twice now given the impression he is about to hit form. His latest run at Newmarket, when squeezed out for room when on the bridle at a crucial stage before staying on strongly from the rear of the field, was an eye-catching effort given the circumstances.
His run at Goodwood can also be upgraded given he refitted plenty of ground by going stands side into the straight, and the winner is a potential group horse. The well-treated King Of Clubs is feared most ahead of Poet Of Life, but the former is not sure to see out this trip as strongly as he does a mile.

ALOUNAK – )15:35 York, 0.5pt each-way – 22/1)
Lots to like in this race, and a chance is given to ALOUNAK, who is stepping up in trip for the first time but arrives in good form and holds a smart turn of foot, something not many of these have.
He will be ridden prominently from stall ten and travel strongly through the race, and on the evidence of his recent Haydock demolition, he is still improving. In a wide-open event and where many will be hoping the heavens open, he ticks the right boxes, so a chance is taken.

NEBULOSA – (16:15 Sandown, 2pts win – 2/1)
NEBULOSA has been on the radar for some time, and she now finds herself in a Class 4 race against many inferior rivals with a true pace on offer. She shaped as though she was ready to strike at Goodwood last time, and the runner-up and sixth have run excellent races next time to boost the form. She was denied a clear run and finished strongly.
That was enough (given her strong back form) to keep her on side today off of this lowly mark of 84. She should track Arabic Charm and put the race to bed comfortably.

MIGRATION – (16:45 York, 1pt win – 9/2)
It’s hard to think MIGRATION is not a group horse in a handicap here, given the way he cruised past his rivals at Goodwood and his strong finishing effort on seasonal return at Salisbury (a race that has worked out very well). Connections could have run earlier in the week off the same mark of 95, but they have chosen to wait for this race, suggesting they think this 8lbs higher mark is no problem at all.
That should be the case given Dashing Rodger bolted up at Ascot off a mark of 99 to give the Salisbury run a big boost, and he looks the group horse in a handicap here. Any rain that arrives will only benefit him, and he is improving at a rate of knots.

ATALIS BAY – (17:20 York, 1pt win – 6/1)
An apprentice handicap but trainer Marco Botti has booked excellent rider Stefano Cherchi for the ride on ATALIS BAY, who already has excellent course form to his name. He was too keen on his latest start at Sandown and wasn’t beaten far by Came From The Dark and Arecibo, two horses that are applying their trade in Group company previously in a Listed event.
His second to Winter Power (another group horse) here at York, when well clear of the rest, is an excellent piece of course form and the strongest on offer. He carries a big weight here but is the class act in the field, and everything looks in place for a big run.
