WONDERFUL WORLD – (11.50 Doncaster, 2ots win – 9/2)
WONDERFUL WORLD was powerful at the finish at Newbury but could not match the pace of a well-handicapped winner who probably benefitted from being held up off the pace. However, the first two were miles better than their rivals, and that was the first time the selection had encountered a slower surface, and he seemed to relish it.
He has been on the radar for much of the season since catching the eye at York when doing best from off the pace behind one now rated 13lbs higher in the handicap, but the opportunities have been wrong for her since.
She failed to handle the track in Listed company at Ripon and then was thrown in the deep end against some useful and improving types here at Doncaster in a good class 2 event. This is a drop into class 4 company today, and this looks like the perfect opportunity for him to get off the mark just 2bs higher.

BERNADO O’REILLY – (1.25 Doncaster, 1pt each-way – 10/1)
A chance is taken on BERNARDO O’REILLY, a big eye-catcher at Newmarket recently, when doing best of those from off the pace on the entire race card. He got no clear run and had to make his challenge wide but finished with plenty left in the tank.
That was his first run over 7f since 2017, and he is well worth another go over this trip. He has a course win to his name when beating today’s favourite Fresh, for who he has a 15lbs swing at the weights. This is wide open, so there is no need to pretend he is a good thing, but he is worth a few quid each way and has the benefit of what should be a good draw.

EMMPRESSIVE LADY – (2.25 Wincanton, 1ot win – 8/1)
EMMPRESSIVE LADY looks well treated here off this mark of 122 on the balance of her form, and she can make a winning return to action with the booking of Sean Houlihan an upgrade on regular jockey Lucy Gardener (with all due respect to her).
This horse was on the upgrade last term before no show at Haydock under an inexperienced ride (only 8 rides), but her second-placed effort to Molly Ollys Wishes at Kempton reads extremely well. The winner is now 16lbs higher in the handicap, while the fifth beat Eglantine Du Seuil next time and the selection is effectively 1lb lower under today’s rider.
That form looks strong, as does her Sandown romp, for which the runner-up scored, beating the useful Stormy Island next time out. She is entitled to improve after just five runs, and she is 2/3 going right-handed. She should be involved at the finish today.

KISSESFORKATIE – (2.25 Wincanton, 1pt win – 7/1)
With the ground quickening up all the time I have had to have another stab at this mares contest and I am happy to take a chance on KISSESFORKATIE .
She has become very hard to ignore the more I edit my talk for the boxes today. She returns to Wincanton, where she is scored in impressive style in her Maiden before falling at the second last when looking like giving the now 134 rated winner a race. Her other run here was an excellent third against the boys when staying on strongly over 2m4f to be beaten a length.
The runner up in that contest is now rated 12lbs higher and the winner 4lbs higher, and they were ten lengths clear of the remainder. She is effectively 1lbs lower today, and this further 2m5 1/2f trip really suits her. She is a top of the ground horse, and the last time she had good ground was when third in a Listed bumper at Cheltenham behind Master Debonair beaten just 1 3/4 lengths, and that bumper is the strongest seen for quite some time.
She is well treated if on song off the back of a 352 day lay off, and this is not that deep, so I want her onside as well as Emmpressive Lady.

IRISH PROPHECY – (3.00 Wincanton, 1pt win – 17/2)
I’ve had two stabs at this contest, and the first is IRISH PROPHECY, who was impressive here last month when a runaway winner in no more than a hack canter. That was a career-best on all known figures, and he is only eight and about to reach the peak of his powers. ~
He will need another step forward in today’s company, but his form ties in with last years one, two, and he is now 2/3 here at Wincanton. He holds good claims now his jumping has improved, and he would have beaten El Presente at Exeter last year if not for a mistake at the final flight. He fits the handicap bracket for this race, with 7/10 winners being rated between 139 and 144.

DOUBLE SHUFFLE – (3:00pm Wincanton, 0.5pt each-way – 18/1)
DOUBLE SHUFFLE is the other I am struggling to get away from. Yes, he is not the force of old, but he is well handicapped off this mark of 143, and he is best going right-handed. He has only had 13 runs over fences in his career right-handed, which has yielded three wins and four seconds.
Of the other five, three came in Graded 1 or 2 company. One was at Kempton behind today’s Cap Du Nord, where he did far too much too soon and didn’t get home after chasing the runaway leader (10 lengths clear of the field) and the other off 156 in heavy ground. I thought he travelled well at Chepstow before blowing up at the fourth last, looking in desperate need of the run.
He has won off 3lbs lower as recent as Jan this year. This might be one last hurrah for him today, but his prominent position will serve him well at this venue.

SUMMERVILLE BOY – (3.20pm Aintree, 2pts win – 10/3) (NAP)
SUMMERVILLE BOY looks a good bit of value here, and last years winner comes out best at the weights in receipt of six pounds from Brewin’upastorm, who I am not convinced is up to his rating anyway.
There are very few intermediate trips for the selection, but the three times he has found them, he has scored in two, with the other a Grade 1 at Punchestown. His latest effort at Kempton should be forgiven, that track doesn’t suit him, and he is more suited to a galloping course such as this one.
He has had Lisnagar Oscar and If The Cap Fits in behind on two occasions, and the one time he was behind the former was when he did far too much on the front end in the Stayers Hurdle. Wilde About Oscar is interesting on his run here last season, but he will need to improve significantly on the form he has shown to trouble the selection.
He has won fresh on four occasions, and he holds the fastest time figure in the field, and his form is rock solid. He ticks plenty of boxes for a race of this nature.

GIFTED RULER – (3.45 Doncaster, 1pt each-way – 11/1)
It’s worth giving one last chance to GIFTED RULER, who was not seen to best effect under the ride he was given at Newbury last time but finished strongly after giving the winner first run. He has been dropped 1lb for that run, but it’s the soft ground that makes him of interest. He has had four starts on soft/heavy ground, and his form figures in Britain read 321.
He was beaten 3/4 of a length by Young Fire at Haydock, a course and soft ground specialist off of this mark, and he scored at the same venue back in 2019. He ran well here at Doncaster earlier in the year behind Baashir, who is four pounds higher, and the third is also four pounds higher in the weights while he is now 2lbs lower.
Forget those minimalistic weights, though, because all they do is highlight that he is capable off of this mark and at this course. The soft ground could be the key to him, given his unexposed profile on this surface, and these are far more exposed rivals than he has been facing this term.
