Horse Racing Tips - Daryl Carter Best Bets On Saturday, September 5

STORMY ANTARCTIC 1.45 Haydock, 1pt win 11/2)

STORMY ANTARCTIC takes a big drop in grade today after contesting a solid Group 1 in France last time when finding only Persian King 2l too good and he will relish today’s conditions with form figures of 141121 on soft ground.

The first two of those came in Group 2 and Group 1 company and it might well be the case that he has needed soft ground to be at his best. He has been rated 114 for two years now and sets a solid standard for the three-year-olds to aim at and he looks overpriced with those at the head of the market needing to take a step forward to surpass what he has achieved.

GRAIGNES 1.45 Haydock, 0.5pts each-way 33/1)

GRAIGNES looks wildly underestimated here after catching the eye in the Lennox Stakes when he finished with running left under hands and heels.

He wasn’t so good last time when dropped back to 6f at Deauville but if he decides to run to the level of his three-year-old season he will surprise a fair few.

Fourth in the French 2,000 Guineas in 2019, beaten just three lengths by Persian King on his first attempt at 1m on heavy ground, was an excellent result given the horses in and around him.

His only other attempt at this trip came over at Deauville again in Group 1 company when beaten 3¼ lengths by Romanised. That level of form would see him a runaway winner and you are getting a price of 33/1 and 3 places about a horse that has recorded a n RPR of 110 under today’s conditions.

NOBLE MASQUERADE (3.05 Ascot, 0.5pts each-way 14/1)

This is highly competitive and a few are entitled to bounce back but NOBLE MASQUARADE could be thrown in off this mark of 77 on handicap debut so a chance is taken that he can take another step forward now going handicapping.

He caught the eye on two runs over 1m and then 7f in novice and maiden company when clearly running over a trip too short but wasn’t disgraced in either event chasing home two good horses in Hot Summer (83) and Lawahed (85).

The form of both of those runs have worked out well but it was his latest start at Newbury over today’s trip when beaten 5 lengths by today’s rival Coconut that makes him of interest.

He was held up and came with a late rattle under careful handling suggesting that there was plenty more to come. He has been given an opening mark of just 77 and is now 13lb better off with Coconut and looks to be a stayer in the making so is worth chancing in a tight knitted event.

ART POWER (3.25 Haydock, 1.5pts win 6/1)

It was all wrong for ART POWER in the Nunthorpe, five furlongs and quick ground is the complete opposite of what this horse wants and today he gets ideal conditions to continue on his upward curve.

Six furlongs, soft ground will see the best of this rapidly improving three-year-old and given that age group have an outstanding record in this race, winning five of the last six and six of the last eight, that he must be taken seriously. This division is not the deepest and needs a star and that could be the selection.

RATHBONE (3.40 Ascot, 0.5pts each-way 14/1)

RATHBONE has caught the eye on his last two runs shaping like his turn is near, so on the back of recent wind surgery and with the blinkers switched for cheekpieces he becomes of interest.

Megan Nicholls takes off 3lb and he now drops back to the 6f trip that saw him run so well at Newcastle when beaten only by two that run in the Group 1 Sprint over at Haydock.

From that race the third was twice a winner, including the consolation race for the Steward’s Cup, the eighth is twice a winner, including the Great St Wilfrid, and the fifth is 1lb higher in the weights after finding a race down the line.

He has taken his form to a new level this year but has failed to see out the seven furlongs and this stiff six should be right up his street.

APLOMB (4.00 Haydock, 1.5pts each-way 7/1)

I have been waiting an age for APLOMB to get these conditions so he better not disappoint me!

My notes read: 5f soft ground flat track will win off this mark of 96. So the fact that he gets all of the above today and is down to a mark of 91 should mean that he can get his head back in front.

He ran on strongly at York despite finishing 13th but was on the wrong side of the track and was outpaced early on, so this testing ground should put pay to that this time.

Connections reach for first time cheekpieces which looks a good move and he is drawn in stall 10 next to the likely pace of the race in stall 9. He should have no excuses tomorrow and if beaten perhaps best left alone.

ALMUFTI (4.15 Ascot, 0.5pts each-way 22/1)

Four-year-olds have won the last five runnings of this race and, although ALMUFTI hasn’t quite gone on from his excellent fourth when racing on the wrong side of the track in the Royal Hunt Cup off a mark of 91, he has run consistently well in competitive handicaps.

He caught the eye at Chester when dropped back to today’s trip but wasn’t granted the clearest of passages and the handicapper has been overly generous dropping him 2lb for that run.

This trip could see him in a better light given he faded at the finish here last month and with the cheekpieces retained and a 3lb lower mark to contend with he could be a big player back at the scene of his best performance this term.
