STARSHIBA – (1.45 Goodwood, 1pt win – 11/2)
This race is open for an improver or one bouncing back to form off a reduced handicap mark so two bets advised here. STARSHIBA will need some luck in running but was better than the bare result over course and distance here last time when held up in a slowly run affair dictated by the winner Dulas.
That form hasn’t worked out too well, but it was his first try on soft ground, so the performance deserves an upgrade. He is very lightly raced and shaped well enough to suggest he could be competitive and drops back into a Class 3 today and the form of his Kempton win when last in this grade has worked out well. There are enough bits and pieces of form to suggest he is well treated off this mark of 87, so he gets a chance to show it.

PISTOLETTO – (1:45pm Goodwood, 1pt each-way – 14/1)
One better drawn is PISTOLETTO at a price. He shaped as though he was ready to go in with a fast-finishing effort six days ago at Chelmsford in a very hot race, despite being slow away from the gates.
The former useful Aidan O’Brien two-year-old may have needed the run at Newmarket on his penaltimate start, but hasn’t run on quick ground since running in a Group 3 at Fairyhouse last season when short of room and eased off when taking on his elders as a three-year-old. However, he is turned out quickly here, and if Luke Morris can gain a prominent position, he can play a hand in the finish.

DERAB – (3.00 Chantilly, 1pt each-way – 12/1)
The draw could have been kinder for DERAB. Still, it was very difficult not to be impressed with his victory at Newmarket last time and the fact that connections decided to skip the English Derby in preference for this is a positive sign.
He showed all the attributes to be a top-class three-year-old potentially, and given the bunch this year, miss a stand-out candidate; there is a spot that needs filling. St Marks Basilica may not improve for these extra 2 furlongs, and nothing looks out of the ordinary from the home front, so he is worth chancing at a double-figure price.

LYDFORD – (3.30 Goodwood, 1pt win – 7/2)
LYDFORD looked like a horse to follow when sticking on at York behind Flying Solo in a race that was run in a good time. Given that come on the back of a gelding operation and a short break, he is entitled to improve again.
He is closely related to Big Orange, so this new trip should suit, and his form on the all-weather last season has worked out well to suggest he is well treated on a mark of 84. He is progressive and one to keep on side.

CLONGOWES – 3:30pm Goodwood, 0.5pt each-way – 66/1)
I want to take a flying chance on CLONGOWES in here at a huge price. He was highly progressive in 2018 for Jim Bolger off of marks in the mid to high 90’s in top-class handicaps in Ireland. Since then, he had a long time off the track before going over hurdles for his new yard in which he didn’t take to the discipline.
He has had two spins on the flat, both coming on slower ground than ideal, and he wasn’t beaten too far by today’s rival Hiroshima at Ascot when fourth of eight. His latest effort was better than the bare result of the 11 lengths defeat to today’s favourite, given he had no racing room at a crucial stage.
He is now down to a mark of 85 and returns to a fast surface for the first time sicne his fourth at the curragh off 95 when attempting to give 6lbs to a horse now rated 10lbs higher so is chanced.
