It was a disappointing return overall from PIPESMOKER at Ffos Las last time, but he is worth another chance with David Bass booked for the ride. He was out on his feet at the finish on that occasion but should benefit a good deal from his yard/seasonal debut. This is not a strong novice hurdle for the grade, but even form 10lbs below his best would be enough. It does take a leap of faith to back him after his last two outings, but his form in defeat is hard to ignore in a race where the highest RPR outside of himself is 118. If he can’t win this, then he never should be backed again.

MEGAN (2.25 Fakenham, 1pt win 11/10)
MEGAN travelled like a dream at Ascot and it was only Soaring Glory that did better than her from mid-pack last time. The handicapper dropping her 1lb for that run is a strange turn of events. This sharper track should see her to better effect and the return to good ground may also be a plus. She is 10lbs better off with Talking About You from Aintree last season, and she has a fitness edge, so she has likeable claims to get off the mark in handicaps back against her own sex. Anything evens or better rates an excellent bet here.

SMURPHY ENKI (2.40 Lingfield, 1pt win 9/4)
Followers will know that I am a huge fan of Sheldon and his performances the last twice can easily be forgiven, especially his penultimate start where his jockey opted for the wrong part of the track. However, even if the money does come for him, he might just need this first run back. SMURPHY ENKI has been handed a stiff opening handicap mark of 130, but he was fast on the upgrade last season in four hurdle starts and once tackling a sounder surface he bolted up on both occasions. He will be fit and ready to go today and his hurdle time figure on his penultimate start at Plumpton blitzed that of the bumper in which Sheldon was fourth on reappearance last season. He surely has more to come, and connections think a good deal of him. With this step back up in trip sure to suit, he gets the vote.
