TOMMY’S OSCAR (2.35 Carlisle, 2pts win 15/8)
A highly competitive race, but the vote goes to TOMMMY’S OSCAR, who was given a poor ride for us last time at Wetherby when looking in complete control of the race only to be caught on the run-in.
Today’s step up in trip has been on the cards for some time, and he should appreciate the return to soft ground. Regular rider Danny McMenamin is back in the saddle, and on the balance of his form, he is entitled to rate higher than this mark of 139. Albert’s Back is the chief threat, but it’s highly likely there is more to come from the selection who has a race fitness edge over all of his main market rivals.
CADZAND (2.50 Huntingdon, 1pt win 6/4)
CADZAND is one of our horses to follow for the season over fences, and he has the potential to be a real force over fences. He was a winner of his only point to point start, has the second strongest hurdle form of this bunch and represents a yard that excels with Novice Chasers.
Miller Bank is interesting, but for the last two seasons, he has improved with racing, so he may need this first outing but certainly remains of interest going forward. This looks like a good spot for Cadzand to get started.
CHRISTMAS IN APRIL (3.10 Carlisle, 1pt each-way 8/1)
It depends if CHRISTMAS IN APRIL is on a going day here, but he was well on top of a useful yardstick on seasonal return at Newton Abbot in what was a competitive race for the grade and on that evidence, a 5lbs rise shouldn’t stop him. He has handled a variety of ground conditions and baring a few blips, which came back to back.
He has been pretty consistent. He needs to take another step forward to defy this mark, but he ran well behind the useful Cloudy Glen at Fontwell off a 3lbs higher mark, so it doesn’t look beyond him. He represents a good bit of value at the morning odds, especially given he was well clear of today’s rival Hill Sixteen on his latest outing.
