DESERT DREAMER – (1.50 York, 1pt win – 13/2)
I feel like I am making far too many excuses for DESERT DREAMER, but she was on the wrong side of the Ascot track when caught late by Zain Claudette last time (all winners that day apart from Danya came stands side) and was given what I would call was a poor ride by Murphy at Newmarket (again on the unfavoured side of the track).
This speed favouring six furlongs at York could be right up her street over this trip, and she is drawn well in stall four, so there will be no excuses there. The quick ground will be in her favour, and she only has 1 3/4 lengths to find with the short-priced favourite and given the circumstances, I am happy to roll the dice one last time with her.

CLFFS OF CAPRI – (3.00 York, 0.5pt each-way – 25/1)
CLIFFS OF CAPRI ran on strongly at Ascot from the rear of the field last time to suggest he is about to hit a rich vein of form, and he was better than the bare result at Newmarket on the wrong side of the track previously. Back up to a 1m today looks a good move, and he has some extremely strong form in and around this handicap mark, and he could take to this course.

GIFTED RULER – (3:00pm York, 1.5pts each-way – 20/1)
GIFTED RULER hasn’t stood much racing, and he has improved with each start this season, and he is going to go in off this same handicap mark sooner or later, and it could be today. He had to wait for a run behind Baashir at Doncaster, and for a horse of his size and stride length, he couldn’t pick up quickly enough once in the clear.
Stepping up to 1m today opens the door for further improvement, and this long home straight will see him have plenty of time and space to make his challenge. He is one of the least exposed in the field and is bred to improve for distance and gets a quietly confident vote.

ALFLAILA – (4.10 York, 1pt each-way – 13/2)
For me, this is between Maglev and ALFLAILA, who have met before and the latter is taken to reverse the form. He didn’t look entirely comfortable at Yarmouth when eased off by Dane O’Neil, and there is a chance that something was amiss on that occasion. He stepped back in the right direction at Newmarket, though, despite giving the first run to the winner and subsequent group scorer Majestic Glory, who is rated 100.
The selection did the best of those from off the pace and was giving away a six-pound penalty to the promising filly. That was a good performance and the step up in trip on that evidence today looks a good move. He is not straightforward (can hang to the left) but is a promising type, and a chance should be taken.

ABSTINENCE – (4.45 York, 1pt win – 7/1)
This is a hot race, but it has gone to three-year-olds in ten of the last ten runnings, so I am keen to keep with the trend. ABSTINENCE is improving at a rate of knots and finished with a good bit of running left at Newmarket when trying this trip for the first time. She did well from an unpromising position at the rear of the field when the finish was fought out between the two that headed up affairs for the entire race.
That was a big improvement on her fourth at Newcastle behind Zeyaadah (beaten 4 lengths), and given that was her first turf start, she is entitled to improve. The winner dissapointed next time when running too bad to be true (Golden Pass) but the runner-up scored in Group company in France next time as did the fourth and the fifth is a next time out winner. She surely has more to offer yet, and this long flat home straight will suit her well.
