OSPREY CALL – (12.20 Newbury, 1pt win – 6/1 bet365)
OSPREY CALL was two free when last seen in March over course and distance, and there is a danger of this happening again the first time out, but he looks fairly treated on balance off this mark of 122 on handicap debut, so it is worth chancing.
The six-year-old showed a good attitude to fight back for second place behind Lord Baddesley (130) on his latest start, which recorded a good figure for the grade. He blitzed his rivals at Doncaster in good time – eight lengths faster than the unbeaten bumper winner Skytastic.
The runner-up from that contest is rated 124 and extremely well handicapped off that mark should he revert back to hurdles given the weight the selection received, but his bumper run at Lingfield on debut has also worked out well. There are plenty of reasons to think he is capable off of this mark, so a chance is taken.

DIDTHEYLEAVEUOUTTO – (2.30 Newbury, 2pts win – 7/2)
DIDTHEYLEAVEUOUTTO needs good ground, so there won’t be many opportunities for him to run this winter, and, likely, he is here to win this Pertemps qualifier rather than play a bit part for places.
He is the offering on the back of an excellent seasonal return at Chepstow behind – what will likely turn out to be a very useful type – in Orbys Legend. That has been a race I have been keen to follow, with the 5th running well in Grade 2 company at Wetherby, the 10th running well to finish second next time and Champagne Well, a recent winner for this column.
The step-up in trip for the selection looks a good source of improvement given he runs over 2m on the flat and is loosely related to a Gold Cup winner. He is up five pounds for his latest second, but that shouldn’t prove beyond him over this new trip, and he could be ready to build on his early Novice hurdle promise.

BARON DE MIDLETON – (3.20 Sedgefield, 2pts win – 7/2 bet365) (NAP)
BARON DE MIDLETON was no match for a much improved Minela Trump over course and distance last time, but he emerged with plenty of credit despite failing to peg back the runner away leader. The winner had previously beaten Pay The Piper at Perth, and that horse chased home Fiddlerontheroof next time out in a hot contest.
He had also beaten a horse called Hewick, who has won two of his next three starts. So while the five-length defeat in isolation looks below par, it’s certainly not out of place in handicapping terms. Shockingly the handicapper has dropped the selection five pounds for that effort, and he now drops into a Class 4 race for the third time in his career.
The other two yielded a win and a ten length defeat in a two runner race over 3m at Wetherby in a Novice event to a horse now rated 146. He sits on a career-low handicap mark and has form figures of 1 and 2 at this venue, and the rain due on Wednesday to soften the ground will be in his favour. He is worth siding with in a poor race. Frimeur De Lancray poses the biggest threat, but he started to jump out to the right at Uttoxeter, and he can’t afford to do that here on this sharp track.
