A good novice limited handicap chase on paper and the penalty FRIEND OR FOE carries certainly plays a part in making this look more competitive than it really is. Paul Nicholls’ horse jumped fluently on chase debut at Uttoxeter and showed a real liking for fences at the first attempt.
That was a career-best on all figures, and he recorded a very eye-catching time when running out an easy winner on that occasion. He warmed to the task after the first circuit, which suggests there is more improvement to come, and his closest market rival in Beyond The Clouds has a habit of getting too close to his fences, causing him to lose ground.
Any News is a danger if bouncing back to his best hurdle form (Cheltenham run), but it is a concern that he fell in his point to point on his only run over fences to date. The selection should be able to dictate from the front end and put those without chasing experience under immense pressure.

ISPAHAN has been a non-runner for us on two occasions, but with cut in the ground at Salisbury, he will surely take his chance. Today’s race represents a drop in grade into Class 4 company after contesting hot Class 3 races the last twice, and he is a winner in this grade off a handicap mark of 80 (4lbs lower).
His best form has come with juice in the ground, including an excellent fourth in Class 2 company behind Prince Alex, who is now 12lbs higher in the handicap. The second from that run is 10lbs higher, while today’s selection is only 3lbs higher. He is relatively unexposed on ground with cut in it and has to go close in this, a weaker event he has contested for some time.
