Plenty of promising sorts in this field but it may pay to take a small chance on YOUTH SPIRIT who has been crying out for this step up in trip and holds some strong form claims in this contest. He doesn’t have the sexy profile of some of these but his RPR’S say he is in with a better chance than his price would suggest. His staying on third at Goodwood over 7f behind the useful Battleground in the Vintage Stakes as well as his defeat of Magic Land prior, make him a horse to keep on side early-on this season. He doesn’t have the scope of a few of these but he handled the July course well and his speed may be able to exploit some of these who in the main, will prove to be middle-distance horses.

EASTERN WORLD has now disappointed at Doncaster on two separate occasions and a chance is taken that he simply doesn’t like that venue. The opposite can be argued here with two excellent runs under his belt at Newmarket on this track and his high draw closest to the stands rail and prominent running style will be well suited. He has looked like a very promising individual and the weight of support behind him at Doncaster shouldn’t be forgotten too quickly.

RIOT was unlucky on the AW at Chelmsford last time and finished with plenty of running left so abandoning him now would be foolish especially given he has proven this handicap mark is well within reach. He is entitled to improve for that run after the 177-day break and the switch back to turf could see him continue the improvement he showed as a two-year-old in which the form rates extremely strong in the context of this race.

MR KATANGA receives one more chance after putting in an improved showing last time out at Taunton to finish second to a course and distance specialist. He was given a good ride that day but failed to have the turn of foot of the winner after the final flight. This course should suit him much better and the booking of Gavin Sheehan looks a big positive so he gets the vote in this weak contest.
