What on earth were connections doing with SHERIFF GARRETT last time when they ran him over 3m in a Class 3?,
He showed up well for a long, long way before being outstayed and this may be the time to catch him as he is 4lb below his last winning handicap mark and has run as though he needed his first two runs of the season after a 689-day absence.

VELASCO makes his handicap debut after bumping into some useful horses in novice and maiden company in his last three starts. These much calmer waters could see him to best effect off this opening handicap mark of 115, which looks a little on the low side especially given the sharp Hereford track he has raced at in two of those three runs hasn’t suited.

IBIS DU RHEU (2.15 Catterick, 1pt each-way 17/2)
Not only did IBIS DU RHEU shape well on his first start for more than 637 days for his new handler but he showed that he retained much of his ability at Kempton in a good Class 3 race.
He was outpaced at a crucial stage over a trip too short and the handicapper has dropped him a further 4lb for that eyecatching run. Back up to 3m today and with that run under his belt, he could prove a different proposition and this race is riddled with exposed types, so he wouldn’t need much more to come out on top.

OSCARS LEADER (2.45 Catterick, 1pt win 5/1)
OSCARS LEADER needs forgiving a below-par effort at Market Rasen but is worth one last punt given he clocked some useful time figures at Haydock and Sandown to suggest that he was well ahead of this handicap mark of 122.
Jennie Candlish now opts for the blinkers which can bring out further improvement and the drop into a Class 3 will help also. His form lines through The Cob and Mister Coffey look strong in the context of this race, so here’s hoping that today is the day.

DEMOPOLIS (3.35 Carlisle, 1pt win 5/2)
This looks to be some excellent placing by Phillip Hobbs with DEMOPOLIS who returns to chasing after an easy victory over hurdles and on the figures the unexposed seven-year-old improved for a fence on chase debut at Ludlow so a 5lb higher mark shouldn’t stop him here. He faces some exposed older rivals some with a point to prove after some poor runs and although this is a 0-120 in name its more like a 0-115 so he is taken to continue winning ways.
