SYMPHONY PERFECT – (2.05 Leicester, 1pt win, 7/2)
This is far easier than the assignment’s set the last three times for SYMPHONY PERFECT, and although she was behind Dora Penny at Newmarket, she never got the clearest of runs and has improved since then.
She was a big eye-catcher from the wrong side of the track at Redcar – a course that has had a bias all season towards the far side rail – however, she flew home behind the useful Chipotle there to record a career-best. She has a bit to find on the official figures in this conditions race, but she would surely hose up off this handicap mark of 84, and the same can’t be said for the top-rated favourite Porsche Cavalier.
Soft ground is an unknown, but an emphasis on stamina would play into the hands of the selection. Daiquiri Francais still has more to offer and is the danger.

MILLTOWN STAR (NAP) – (3.50 Leicester, 1pt each-way, 16/1)
This is tricky, but it looks as though it’s asking for an upset, and that could come from MILLTOWN STAR. He looked threatening for a long way at Ascot ten days ago before his effort petered out towards the finish, and that’s not the first time he has shaped as though a drop in trip was required. He has fallen a long way in the weights in the last 12 months all of which have come over trips of 1m, and he is now back to a mark of 87.
His last effort off of this handicap mark was a 1/2 length second to Tomfire at Newmarket on soft ground. He is now 12lbs better off with that rival and has only raced on soft ground once since then when returning from a 284-day lay-off at Goodwood after a gelding operation.
His latest effort was a step back in the right direction, and the drop to 7f, for which he last run came off a handicap mark of 100, looks a good move. He is handicapped to go well here, has ideal underfoot conditions, which is more than can be said for most and is now dropping to his ideal trip. Three-year-olds have a good record in this race, so Wobwobwob in first-time blinkers rates the main danger.

SERENADING – (7.30 Newcastle, 2pt win, 10/3)
It’s very hard to get away from SERENADING, who is 2-2 here at Newcastle and takes a drop into Class 5 company for the first time since scoring at this venue in September last term. She has run with extreme credit this season in Class 2 and 3 company and hasn’t always had the best of luck in running.
She has been firmly on the radar for some time and is now 2lbs lower than when chasing home Declared Interest at Newbury. That form easily sets the standard in this contest, and she caught the eye when denied a clear run at Ascot when last seen in September. P J McDonald jumps back on board, and the pair have form figures of 11234, and everything looks in place for a big run. She is unexposed at this 1m trip and is sure to appreciate a return to this Newcastle track.
