SAFRAN (2.15 Redcar, 1pt win, 11/4)
This looks like an excellent opportunity for SAFRAN, who has dropped 9lbs in the handicap this term and sneaks into a frail 0-80 Class 4 race for the first time. He caught the eye at Ripon last time when he dropped into a 0-85 Class 4 race when denied a clear run. That was a much stronger affair than this, and he had held his form well this season despite bumping into the improving Garden Oasis twice, who is now rated 9lbs higher than when they last met.
The drop to 7f on his time figures over 1m looks a good move, and he won’t find many better opportunities than this to get his head in front in the UK. Sean Kirrane is a positive booking for this apprentice handicap, while Strongbowe has a bigger performance in him and should not be underestimated.

IDOAPOLOGISE (2.45 Redcar, 1pt win, 10/3)
It was too bad to be true when 5th of 6 at Haydock when we last saw IDOAPOLOGISE, and the fact that he has now had 96 days off the track gives reason to think that the run can be written off. He had previously been progressive on good ground before that poor effort and looks worth another chance back down in grade.
His form figures on good ground or better read 531215 with his penultimate defeat at Ayr (3rd) only by a short head to Garden Oasis, who is 11lbs higher in the handicap, and his Beverley two-length defeat (2nd) came behind La Trinidad, who is now 30lbs higher in the handicap – while the selection is only 7lbs higher. He looks like a well-handicapped horse on multiple pieces of form, is lightly raced and well worth another chance on return from a short break (he has won off the back of a 97-day break previously).

CORVAIR (2.55 Yarmouth, 1pt win, 11/2)
Farhh To Shy is interesting up in grade, and his unexposed profile will be very popular amongst these rivals, but the time figures haven’t been anything to get excited about, and he hasn’t produced any next time out winners from his two wins to date. This is a step up in grade also, so the warning signs are there at his short price.
CORVAIR hasn’t won on turf yet, but he has shown himself to be very useful on turf this season. He failed to see out the 1m trip at Redcar last time and prior to that did well on the sharp end of the pace at Newmarket and the second is since a winner off of 88, and the fourth has won twice since and rated 9lbs higher, while the fifth won at Sandown two starts later. On paper, this is an easier task than he has had this season, and inclusive of the jockey claim, he is effectively running off a handicap mark of 89. He has been remarkably consistent this term (unlucky on multiple occasions) and has had Dazzling Dan in behind previously, and is 5lbs better off.
Percy’s Lad has been frustrating and looks poorly handicapped. Global Esteem may get the run of the race but was beaten in Class 5 company last time and may want soft ground or a stiffer test. Maxi Boy lacks any sort of pace and had little excuses at Newmarket and Ascot the last twice, and Equitation is unlikely to stay this 7f trip. If the favourite improves, he will be tough to beat, but his price is not worth chancing given the above. Corvair must go close.
