This race can go to ARIEL, who still looks ahead of the handicapper after bumping into a subsequent winner at Doncaster on ground that would have been slow enough for him. That winner is now 8lbs higher in the handicap, while the third did not harm the form when filling the same spot next time at Newmarket in a hot race that has produced two next time out winners and almost a third (beaten a neck).
That form has some strength in depth to it, and the race was run faster than the other 1m winner on the card that is now 12lbs higher in the handicap and had beaten Tasfeeq previously. He is back on a quicker surface here and drawn well in stall two to grab the rail on the front end (stall one likes to be held up and awkward at the start). Shuv H’Penny King was behind the selection at Doncaster, and Sevenal and Zwelela look like they want much stiffer tests than this good ground 1m. With a soft lead, likely he has to go close off this 3lbs higher mark.

VESELA – (16:15 Salisbury, 1pt each-way – 11/1)
A chance is taken on VESELA for who the Listed contest at York didn’t get to the bottom of her, and she did very well to only be beaten five lengths given the interference she suffered in the home straight. She was never able to get going sandwiched between horses, but there was plenty of promise in the run to suggest she is an upwardly mobile filly.
She ran with credit on seasonal reappearance in a well-run race at Newbury behind Lilac Road, and she took a good step forward for that at York on her latest run. She has more to offer yet and looks a favourable price to take a chance that she will again improve. There is plenty of pace on in this race with the likes of Lilac Road, Freyja, Salsada and A La Voile (held up last time) to ensure this is a good test, and that will suit the lightly raced three-year-old.

MODESTUS – (4.50 Salisbury, 1pt win – 10/3)
He is certainly not straight forward, but MODESTUS is bred to be much better than this opening mark of 69, and he ran his best race yet at Windsor last time, pulling clear with the front three in a race where the cream rose to the top and the second has given the form a boost next time.
He is a half brother to Time Test, for which this yard saw a winning handicap debut as well as Time Chaser. It could prove significant the yard have booked Ryan Moore, and the selection looks just the type that will benefit from first-time cheek-pieces. He will need to be ridden prominently and has a good draw in stall five to gain a favourable position, so a chance should be taken.

A tricky contest, but POWER STATION has shaped as though this mark is well within reach, and now gelded and freshened up after a poor run at Doncaster back in June, he could be ready to strike in this winnable event.
He has already had Coul Kat in behind previously and chased home an improver of Chris Walls’ on seasonal return and first start after a wind op – one that is now 14lbs higher in the handicap. Roman Mist was probably flattered by the proximity of her win at Nottingham, given she was well positioned in a slowly run affair but is still feared.
