Horse Racing Tips - Daryl Carter Best Bets On Wednesday, August 18th

LIVE IN THE MOMENT – (1.50 York, 0.5pt each-way – 12/1)

This is ultra-competitive, and as I said in the video, I came down on a fair few, but the one that ticked all my boxes was LIVE IN THE MOMENT, a prominent racer and well-drawn in the centre of the track and is unbeaten at the course. She is also unexposed – 5 for 6 over five furlongs, and she has been strong at the finish to suggest this extra half a furlong will suit. Her only defeat at the trip came on seasonal return after 317 days off the track by an improving horse.

She is entitled to improve for that run, and this looks to have been the target for her. She is 2-2 here at York, with her most impressive effort on good ground and the other from the wrong side of the track. She has a great attitude, and providing things fall right, she has very few negatives.

NOBLE TRUTH – (2.25 York, 2pts win – 5/2)

Plenty of people saw the finishing effort of Ehraz at Newmarket on debut behind NOBLE TRUTH. But most missed the fact that the winner was strong at the finish despite tugging the arms off William Buick for much of the race.

He was going away at the finish in the style of a very useful horse, and his expensive price tag gives optimism that there is plenty more to come. He may not be straightforward, but that only strengthens his dominance in this field for me, with the promise of more to come, and he rates a good bet over the other two promising horses in the field.

HIGH DEFINITION – (3.00 York, 1pt each-way – 7/2)

Yes, it’s each-way theft time, and backing both HIGH DEFINITION and Sir Lucan at 4/1, seems a smart play here. Something was clearly amiss with High Definition in the Irish Derby, and that can be forgiven after clipping heels early on and then hanging and racing awkwardly.

He is better judged on his Dante third which gave the firm impression 1m4f is a trip he is in desperate need of. The form of that race could not have worked out better with Megallan, now a group winner in open company, and his run did come on the back of a 229-day break for the selection, so he is entitled to improve again, and at the prices, he is worth another chance.

SIR LUCAN – (3:00pm York, 1pt each-way – 7/2)

Aidan O’Brien’s other runner SIR LUCAN is a strong stayer himself and one I was slightly disappointed with in the Gordon Stakes, given he cost me a small fortune. However, on reflection, I think if Frankie Dettori had thrown the kitchen sink at him, he would have gotten up.

This long home straight at York will suit him, and the first time cheek-pieces are an interesting addition. He is a strong traveller who is improving with every run. I am quite keen to take on the favourite Kemari, who I think was flattered at Ascot in a weaker race than this by being ridden prominently.

EY UP IT’S MAGGIE – (4.45 York, 1pt win – 8/1)

EY UP IT’S MAGGIE was a good winner when last seen over 5f at Carlisle and although 11lbs higher in the handicap, she hasn’t had the opportunity to prove that mark is beyond her after running over 6f the last twice in hot class 2 handicaps.

She was a big eye-catcher here at York over 6f behind First Folio, sticking to the task strongly despite having made all of the running at a good clip. The speed figure for that race is on par to suggest she is well treated off this mark of 87 if dropped in trip, but connections stuck with 6f at Chester last time in a good class 2 fillies race, and although she wasn’t disgraced, she was posted wide for much of the race, and that run suggested a move back to 5f would be the right action to take.

The fourth from her latest run (a horse she has beaten previously) ran a blinder in Listed company at Pontefract this month. She likes it here at York with form figures of 343, and the form of each of those has worked out well.

WONDERFUL WORLD – (5.20 York, 0.5pt each-way – 14/1)

Favourite Bosh was favoured by the stands side at Naas last time and it would be a surpise to see him go one better here. WONDERFUL WORLD looks well-handicapped for Mick Channon, given he split two 103 rated horses on debut at Doncaster over 5f – a trip too short.

He failed to improve at Bath next time over the same trip but took a good step forward at Brighton despite hating the track when he stepped up to 6f for the first time. He definitely has the ability to win off this mark, so a chance is taken.

JADHLAAN – (5:20pm York, 1pt each-way – 12/1)

JADHLAAN looked a horse to follow when almost scoring here on debut under Jim Crowley, and that race clocked a useful time figure and given the winner (by head) is now rated 11lbs higher than the selection, and the runner-up has just bolted up off an opening mark of 88, he looks well treated off 92.

Soft ground didn’t suit at Haydock next time when getting beat at odds-on but returned to York, he bolted up on a quicker surface, and while he didn’t beat much, he could have hardly done it any easier. He had no room at Newmarket over 6f, and the rising ground exposed his stamina at that trip, so it’s a surprise they went again at Goodwood. York 5f and quick ground look his optimum, and he has the right combination to score off this mark of 92 here.
