YGGDRASIL – (12.30 Bangor, 2pts win – 11/2)
YGGDRASIL shaped like a well-handicapped horse at Newton Abbot behind our horse to follow Scatman, when beaten just two lengths, and he shaped as though he would certainly improve for the run.
Now race-fit with his attentions turned to fences he could be one to keep on side for the short term. Being a four-year-old, he gets 9lbs from all of his rivals today, and he has a fitness edge over all bar three. He looks like a lovely prospect for chasing and against mainly exposed rivals. He should take all the beating.

HURRICANE MITCH – (12.40 Exeter, 1pt win – 11/2)
Trainer Harry Fry has a 31% strike rate here at Exeter over hurdles, and his HURRICANE MITCH could be thrown in off this opening handicap mark of 105 now upped in trip to 3m for the first time.
He has some strong bumper form in the context of this race behind Runswick Bay (124), and Wilde About Oscar (150), notably the former in which the third is rated 113, the fourth is rated 111 and that 2m trip looked far too sharp for him.
His first start over hurdles at Hereford confirmed that he needed a trip when the 2m3f wasn’t enough for him, but he stuck to the task well in the closing stages, and the third went within 1/2 a length of scoring next time off an opening mark of 103. He bumped into a good one rated 120 at Sedgefield next time, and today I expect to see significant improvement over this new trip on return.

MACK THE MAN – (2.10 Exeter, 1pt win – 9/2)
This is a good race, but Tulin does not convince me at the head of the market off this stiff mark of 125, and Fanfan Du Seuil, although he may look well handicapped with the falling rating next to his name, hasn’t really earned that lofty mark to make him well treated.
MACK THE MAN has a good record fresh, and his efforts in the Imperial Cup last time and in the Betfair Hurdle can easily be forgiven in this company. Prior to that, he was a comfortable winner at Wincanton over today’s rival River Bray off this mark when better than the bare result, and it’s very hard to forget how well he was travelling in the Betfair Hurdle in 2020 before being brought down. He is lightly raced and has very sound claims today.

COCONUT SPLASH – (2.40 Exeter, 3pts win – 7/4 William Hill) (NAP)
Well, it’s not the Paddy Power but Exeter instead and likely in search of a softer surface than they will likely get at Cheltenham this weekend. COCONUT SPLASH is easily the best-handicapped horse in training after chasing home Messire Des Obeaux and Chantry House the last twice – and he was being held onto!
He has a far easier task here, and although I think that they may keep hold of him again, it’s unlikely he will get a lofty rise for winning this race anyway, and he is sure to do it cheekily rather than by a distance. He surely has to be winning this, and this looks like a race to follow. Jay Bee Why can follow him home.

LLANDINABO LAD – (3.00 Bangor, 1pt win – 15/2)
Last years Novice Hurdle form was nowhere near the level of that of the Irish, but it sets a pretty good standard when comparing it to handicaps this side of the water and LLANDINABO LAD looks fairly treated under Isabel Williams, who claims five off his back. He is effectively running off a handicap mark of 136 on this handicap debut.
His form at the start of last season includes beating Minella Drama and Guard Your Dreams on seasonal return is head and shoulders above his rivals today. He clocked an excellent time figure when scoring at Haydock second time out over Do Your Job (143) and Flic Ou Voyou (135) by four lengths.
His second at Ascot behind My Drogo when having Soaring Glory (since a winner off 143), who he gave 5lbs to, looks very good, and his last two runs off the season can easily be forgiven after stopping quickly with a likely wind problem. He returns on the back of a wind surgery, and he must go close against this company.

MACFIN – (3.10 Exeter, 2pts win – 5/2)
Everything went wrong for MACFIN on chase debut at Fakenham. He clouted a few, and then was nearly run off the track and couldn’t get to the leader once turned into the home straight. That was an excellent first effort over fences on seasonal return, and he is sure to strip fitter for that outing.
The winner went close next time and is now 10lbs higher, while the selection, inclusive of the jockey claim, is effectively 9lbs lower today. He has some strong right-handed Novice Hurdle form to his name behind the useful Solwara One on the second start last season, and this is far easier than his latest assignment despite the step up in grade.
Unexposed, he is sure to go close off this workable mark on the back of a career-best effort after just six career starts.
