ABSTINENCE – (4.15 Bath, 1pt win – 4/1)
ABSTINENCE shaped as though she had a big pot in here when behind Golden Pass and Free Wind at Newmarket. That run can be upgraded given she had to come from the rear of the field in a steadily run race, and it’s tough to do that at Newmarket at the best of times.
She looks ready for this step up in trip, which is a source of improvement, and it’s highly likely we haven’t seen the best of her yet. She was an excellent staying on fourth over 1m2f at Newcastle in a Group 3 behind Zeyaadah and Technique earlier this year, and she has improved with each outing.

SOME REIGN – (4.33 Wetherby, 1pt win – 11/2)
It’s a good race this, but Wetherby is not an easy track for Novices to make their debut with the railway fences in the home straight catching a lot of horses out.
Prince Escalus jumped well on debut, but it’s interesting that he has been kept to right-handed tracks, and he won’t get his own way out in front in here with Return Ticket and Across The Line. SOME REIGN has an excellent record at this track on good to soft or better with form figures of 2F31, and the fall came when looking like a commanding winner over today’s rival Ballvic Boru.
He has been off the track for 178 days, but three of his four wins under rules have come when fresh. His hold up style of racing will be suited to today’s field, and at the prices, he represents a good bit of value here.

TOMMY’S OSCAR – (5.05 Wetherby, 2pts win – 2/1) (NAP)
TOMMY’S OSCAR gets the services of a talented 5lb conditional jockey, effectively allowing him to run off a handicap mark of 134.
On the evidence of his final run of the season in the Scottish Champion Hurdle, that looks rather appealing in a race of this nature. He had a very productive season last term, and he has a good record first time out. He danced most dances last term, and this looks a good starting point for him with his trainer cherry-picking this race.
He remains one to be very positive about, and he comes out on top not only on form but time figures as well, and he is only effectively 2lbs higher than his handicap demolishing of Christopher Wood (147) at Kelso last term.

LAMORNA COVE – (5.55 Bath, 1pt win – 4/1)
Three-year-olds have an excellent record in this race-winning three of the last five and four of the last six. LAMORNA COVE gave the firm impression last time at Ffos Las that she had more to offer, and the booking of Tom Marquand by David Menuisier is eye-catching despite the pair being 0-5.
She has improved with racing and got the job done in good style at Newbury despite being held up off a slow pace before finding herself unable to get going on the undulations of Newmarket next time in a similarly slowly run event when held up at the rear of the field.
Today’s step back up to 1m despite her pedigree should suit given her racing style, and there will be a good clip on here to allow her time to get into her race. She should be making her presence felt in this company.
