None of the three who met here 33 days ago makes too much appeal from their current handicap marks, and Diocletian returns after 356 days off, so the answer could be MCGOWAN’S PASS. He ran a blinder at Sandown behind Hydroplayne when doing best of those on the sharp end of the pace.
The return to Kelso for which his form figures read 2 and 3, both off higher marks than his current rating and in deeper contests, looks a good move by connections. Over the last two years, he has been remarkably consistent, finishing outside of the first two on just two occasions, and both of those came after a break. He should have enough in the locker to get his head back in front today, and the more rain, the better his chances.

PAY THE PIPER is nothing if not consistent and gets the vote to get back to winning ways at the chief expense of Riders onthe Storm, who is feared if returning to his best in a first-time hood. The selection also has his own new headgear, and the cheek-pieces first time could bring out further improvement, and some of his form this term suggests he is not done with yet off this mark of 142.
He rallied well at Musselburgh under a waiting ride that didn’t pay off, but today he finds himself in a winnable race with plenty of rivals having questions to answer. The step back up in distance today and the return to softer ground both look positives to his chances.
