Our top tipster, Dary Carrter warms up for the weekend, with four selections across Friday’s cards, including two tips apeice at Musselburgh and Newton Abbot. Check out his picks below, alongside a Bet £10 – Get £20 In Free Bets Offer from Hollywood Bets.
1.55 Newton Abbot – Checkitsme (1pt win – 7/1 generally, 15/2, Wills Hill, 365, 888)
CHECKITSME finished off her race at Taunton with a flurry, and she has shaped as though this step up in distance is on the cards for a short while now. She did the best of those from the rear of the field at Taunton and clocked a good time figure for the grade when finishing third there, and the runner-up has since given the form a boost.
She was a big eye-catcher, and the Plumpton run, when dropped back to 2m, can easily be forgiven with that short trip against her. She should have won on her penultimate start at Ffos Las when trading at 1.81 in running only to make a mistake at the last. Still, she stuck on gamely there, and she is steadily improving with each start. This is effectively a drop in grade, and Bradley Harris gets on well with her.
The cheek-pieces go back on today for the first time since 2021, which will help her see out her race, and she will enjoy today’s soft ground (sole win on soft in Jan).

2.20 Musselburgh – Iolani (0.5pt each-way – 10/1 generally, 12/1 365,)
It may pay to take a chance on IOLANI, who won this race last year at lofty odds of 33/1 on his second start after a break, and connections look to have taken the same route again after being well beaten at Newcastle last time out. His latest run at Newcastle was without the cheek-pieces (as was he first start last term) and just like last year, they are reapplied for today’s run.
He has won on his second hurdle start after a break on two occasions and on his second start on the flat on two occasions also. The common denominator in that is headgear, and when reapplied over hurdles in the last two years, his record reads 1613. He is worth a small each-way bet to repeat the feat.

3.05 Newton Abbot – Salcombe (0.5pt each-way – 100/1 generally)
This is by no means a deep race, and while the favourite Whisky Express has shown signs of ability, she has been clueless to date in her races. She is on the radar for down the line, but this sharp track might highlight her inexperience. Bolintlea looks the one to beat on the back of her Hereford second last time out over 3m, but the level of her form is nothing to be taking a short price about.
The rest have shown very little, so it might be a race to take a chance on something, and that could be SALCOMBE for who her chance is pinned on a first time tongue-tie. She shaped with plenty of promise in a bumper at Stratford on debut and caught the eye travelling smoothly at Taunton before being unable to go the pace in the latter stages of the race. The first time tongue-tie angle with some of Colin Tizzards horses has been profitable during just this month.
Killer Kane scored in a first time tongue-tie at Kempton after a poor performance last time out, and Name In Lights bolted up at Wincanton in the same headgear four days ago (the two winners they have had in March).

4.05 Musselburgh – Keep The Faith (0.5pt win – 33/1 generally)
KEEP THE FAITH is seven pounds out of the handicap here, but his 12 pounds weight for age allowance – in a roundabout way – helps with that burden, and he gets first-time cheek-pieces on his second start in a handicap.
He needs to improve significantly on what he has achieved to date, but to my eye, he has not looked entirely comfortable going left-handed given his dominance on his right fore, and a switch to a right-handed track could see him take a step forward. Along with the headgear, there are reasons to think an improved performance awaits in this 0-110 where most of the field have proved unreliable.
This is his second start over this 2m4f trip, and given he was rated 62 on the flat running over 1m-1m5f, this extra distance should suit, as well as the sounder surface, so he is worth a small chance.
