ELHAM VALLEY – 1.45 Newbury, 1pt win – 7/1)
A chance is taken with ELHAM VALLEY, who is now 12lbs lower than his excellent Fred Winter run last term, and he shaped as though a return to form may be imminent in cheek-pieces at Warwick last time out. The step-up in trip has long been on the cards for him, and soft ground should hold no fears. The headgear is removed today, and this is not a deep contest, and he is favourably priced to bounce back.
BACK ELHAM VALLEY AND GET £20 BACK AS CASH
VAZIR – (2.20 Newbury, 1pt win – 9/1)
In The Air could be anything for Gary Moore on his first start in Britain and first for the yard, but it wasn’t a deep race he won in France, and he wore cheek-pieces which is never a good sign for a Juvenile on his second racecourse start.
It might pay to take him on here with VAZIR, who shaped with plenty of promise for Alan King at Doncaster on his first start after a wind operation and was very tenderly handled in the closing stages in a race won by his stablemate. It could be that connections are looking for a handicap mark, but he was rated 89 on the flat in France, and the presence of Tom Cannon is a positive sign.
This shouldn’t take much winning, and the return to a sounder surface is another plus to his chances. He beat Teddy Blue – a recent Grade 2 Juvenile runner-up at Kempton on his last start on the flat in France – and there was a lot to like about his latest run. That form looks fairly solid for this level, and there’s undoubtedly improvement to come.
