There’s a good pace on here, and that will suit HATHLOOL, who wasn’t seen to best effect behind Athmad when held up off a sedate gallop at Chelmsford last time. The return to a stiffer track here at Newcastle is also a positive, and connections disregard the hood.
He still looks on an upward curve, and with mileage, in his handicap mark, the four-year-old looks the way to go. Athmad is a clear danger, with both Star Of St James and Straitouttacompton having the stamina to prove. The selection comfortably held Athmad at Wolverhampton last term, and despite being worse off at the weights, he is unexposed and firmly on the up.

SPARTAN FIGHTER. – (7.00 Newcastle, 1pt win – 14/1)
There is a lack of pace in this contest which could enable SPARTAN FIGHTER to get his own way out in front, and with the drop back from 7f to 6f looking a positive move on recent outings, he could prove hard to pass.
He sits on a workable handicap mark and drops back into a Class 5 for the first time since second over 7f in December (6 runs ago), and this is the first drop back into Class 5 over 6f since scoring off a handicap mark 2lbs lower in the same month. Three of his five victories have come over course and distance, and he is handicapped to go well from a good draw in stall 8.
