BRAESIDE – (4.05 Navan, 1pt win – 9/2)
I am a big fan of Run Wild Fred, and he deserved a significant upgrade for his finishing effort when making a horror mistake at Leopardstown, but he is a very good moving horse and his record on ground described as heavy – such as today’s- is not a good one.
The market has underestimated the chances of BRAESIDE, who looks a fair price considering his ability to handle testing conditions, and he will see this trip out strongly. His latest effort needs to be forgiven when unable to get into the race from the rear of the field, but he was a big eye-catcher at Leopardstown at Christmas and was a good winner of the Grand National Chase at Cork.
He needs further, and Jamie Codd is on in preparation for the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham in three weeks, so I expect him to come on again for his recent effort. He has some strong hurdle form to suggest he is worthy of his rating of 145 (148 in the UK), and he is a horse on the upgrade. He is the one likely to run to his mark under today’s conditions. Farouk D’alene has some strong recent form over fences, but I have never been convinced of him at 3m, and with today’s testing ground thrown into the mix, he won’t be the strongest at the finish.

DIGITAL – (6.00 Southwell, 1pt win – 11/4)
This is a close-knitted contest, but preference is for DIGITAL, who ran with extreme credit when third behind Zarzyni (2nd) here at Southwell last time out on the back of a break over 6f. That run should have knocked the freshness out of him, and much better is expected now returned to the minimum trip. He ran with the choke out for much of the contest on the sharp end of the pace and just shaped as though he would improve for the outing.
A promising three-year-old last term, mixing it in some top-end handicaps, he looks as though he will continue to improve throughout his four-year-old season. This mark of 90 on the balance of his form is workable, and he should be able to fend off Zarzyni with a stronger finishing effort this time around.
