A chance is taken with JATILUWIH, who shaped as though he needed the run at Ascot but looked threatening for a moment or two, so the fact the handicapper has been quick to relent by dropping him five pounds is rather baffling. He is one of the least exposed in this field in terms of British runs, and his recent Hunter Chase second at Worcester looks a good piece of form given the narrow margin winner who came out and bolted up next time in a deep Veterans Chase at Aintree and is now eight pounds higher (143). He hasn’t had many goes over this three-mile trip either and reducing those runs to when he has encountered soft ground sees a sole ten length point to point victory. He was highly progressive over hurdles, with his best work coming on soft ground, reaching a rating of 146, and he is 11lbs lower here over fences. He has a future in this sphere and over staying distances, and it’s another positive that he is returning to the scene of the British debut win back in 2019. I am surprised at how short Demachine is, given he looks handicapped to his best and is not a sure stayer. Legends Gold is a clear danger.

YOUNG O’LEARY – (3:30 Taunton, 2pt win 7/2)
This is now a drop into Class 5 company for YOUNG O’LEARY, who ran with credit at Wincanton despite the drop in trip on the quicker ground being against him and now upped to 3m for the first time over fences, he can continue his improvement. This looks like a good opening with the races lacking depth, and the return to a softer surface is in his favour. He has run well on both visits to Taunton, scoring in one and finishing second to a smart rival in the other when over hurdles, and he ticks plenty of boxes for today’s contest.
