MANINSANE ran a blinder on handicap debut off this mark at Cheltenham when making a bold bid from the front only to fade coming up the hill and then went to Doncaster and was yet to play his hand when falling at the final flight. That run suggests he is on a favourable mark, and this is much less competitive, especially with Just The Man out of form at current times. The claim of Theo Gillard today taking off five pounds means he is an attractive proposition in this contest. The form of his 11 length romp at Market Rasen in October could not have worked out better, and this is a prime opportunity to get his head in front in handicaps.

ORRISDALE (2.00 Hereford, 1pt win 2/1)
I want to give a chance to ORRISDALE, who comfortably held Torigni when they last met at Market Rasen on good ground. He has been pigeonholed as a soft ground horse, but his record suggests he goes just as well on a sounder surface, if not better, with form figures of 216 – the latter being his debut run. He looks fairly treated off this mark of 127, and small fields seem to bring out the best in him with form figures in 8 or fewer runner fields reading 2F3323211 (the fall when looking like an easy winner at Newton Abbot). He is 0-8 over fences, but he won’t get many better opportunities than this.

OSCAR ROBERTSON (2.30 Hereford, 1pt win, 9/4)
OSCAR ROBERTSON threw in a poor performance at Doncaster last time and he needs to bounce back. Still, he could well do now returned to the scene of his cosy win over today’s rival Kauto The King in November 2020, and he is probably best forgiven his latest run on soft ground. The return to a sounder surface today is a big positive, and he looks like the best-handicapped horse in the race. All of his best work has come at Wetherby except for one run here at Hereford, and today’s favourite Powerstown Park doesn’t look the most trustworthy. The selection is unexposed over three miles, and other than his latest blip, he was firmly on the upgrade, so it is well worth another chance to continue on his upward curve.
