THE BIG BREAKAWAY – (1:50pm Newbury, 2pts win – 8/1)
The revert to hurdles and a big performance from THE BIG BREAKAWAY could prove to define the rest of his season. This is a prep run, but connections rarely give their horse an easy time in this sort of race anyway, i.e they are here to win.
The selection reverts back to hurdles for the first time since fourth in the Ballymore Novice Hurdle in March 2020, when fourth to Envoi Allen doing best of the British. Prior to that run, he had bolted up on two occasions, including here at Newbury in excellent style scoring on the bridle by eight lengths over the now 142 rated Craignieche. That’s going back a fair bit, but he has held his form well in highly competitive races over fences with only his jumping letting him down – not his engine.
He ran poorly in first-time cheek-pieces at Sandown behind subsequent winner Chantry House, but that track with its stern test of jumping with its railway fences was never going to suit him. Before that, he ran a blinder on return at Newton Abbot before a fall at the last.
His RSA third was a good effort last March, and he should have won the Grade 1 Kauto Star but for an error at the last fence. Back over hurdles today off this mark of 144 (which hasn’t changed since 2020), he could easily be thrown in. He looks like the class act in the field, and his price is far too big.#

SCEAU ROYAL – (3:00pm Newbury, 1pt win – 2/1)
SCEAU ROYAL is the class act in this field, and although under a penalty, he still should have enough in the locker to take care of this field. I of course, am hoping that Funambule Sivola is not here to win for Grand Annual aspirations down the line (Grand Annual worth the same amount as this race), and Sky Pirate shouldn’t be good enough.
Hitman lacks the speed of the selection and looks as though he wants 2 1/2 miles to my eye, so the speedy Sceau Royal who will have ground to suit can land back to back wins in the race.

HOWDYALIKEMENOW – 3.35pm Newbury, 0.5pt each-way – 40/1)
HOWDYALIKEMENOW is a bit punty, but his odds are huge given the intertwining form lines. In October, he arrived at the yard from Ireland after running a remarkable race at Wexford when doing too much too soon but finished a respectable second. He bolted up on his first start for the Williams yard at Stratford when recording an excellent time figure – 12 lengths faster than the Juvenile winner rated 124 and 29 lengths faster than the bumper, which was won by Aucunrisque (rated 126).
From that race, the second Jay Jay Reilly is now rated 130, and he beat a horse recently called Grangeclare Glory (3rd) by 15 lengths. That same horse was beaten eight by JPR One (today’s favourite) at Taunton. The third behind Howdyalikemenow was just touched off next time by a neck by Black Poppy, who was beaten ten lengths by Broomfield Burg (beaten 14 by the selection). The selection won next time in a weak race at Fakenham, but the runner up has won since and was in receipt of 13lbs, and the track didn’t suit our lad either.
He was given a strange ride at Cheltenham in November when travelling like the winner to the third last until he was swamped but ran on underhand and heels riding, finishing with plenty left. There’s a good chance that he didn’t handle the downhill run, but he finished well, and then he won easily at Ffos Las, taking the scalp of Wicked West, who is a rock-solid 125 rated performer, and he did it effortlessly – the third has won again since. He was then bafflingly sent over 2m5f in the Grade 2 Leamington Novices Hurdle, for which he didn’t stay and was held up well off the pace (made all the running in previous starts or prominent).
This is punty, and he may not be anywhere near good enough, but it’s worth taking the chance.

BROOMFIELD BURG – (3:35pm Newbury, – 1pt win – 5/1)
BROOMFIELD BURG has improved with each run over hurdles, and he travelled through the race at Cheltenham like one well ahead of his handicap mark but failed to go past the game subsequent winner. I am hoping that was the effect of the hood because he did the same here at Newbury behind Silent Revolution.
The hood came off at Kempton, and he blitzed an inferior field (second won next time) by ten lengths, but his hurdling was much sharper, and his turn of foot was very taking. He is a horse that has wanted to travel a stride quicker than the contests he has been running in, which marks him down as a good candidate for a strongly run Betfair Hurdle. He attempted to give 25lbs to Lively Citizen at Cheltenham, and that rival is now 7lbs higher. That race has worked out well, and it looks solid form.
The sixth won next time, the fifth was previously beaten six lengths by Gowel Road and Unexpected Party, the 7th was once two lengths off MC Alpine at Cheltenham, and the 7th Mengali Khan ran well at Kempton next time out. His previous bumper form when beating Brorson (rated 130) by eight lengths on the bridle also looks good. He could have a good bit in hand now the hood has come off, and he has learned to settle.

IN REM – (3.50pm Warwick, 1pt win – 7/4 )
IN REM deserves a big upgrade for his effort here in heavy ground last time when bringing up the four-timer. He was unsuited by the way the race developed at the rear of the field and was checked and forced around the field on the home turn but had enough in the tank to get up on the line. A five pounds rise for that effort shouldn’t be enough to stop him going in again, and he is surely worthy of a mark in the low 120’s before long.
