DEYRANN DE CARJAC – (1.15 Kempton, 1pt win – 9/2)
DEYRANN DE CARJAC is becoming a bit of a cliff horse, but it would be folly not to give him one more chance back on a flat right-handed track given how impressive he was at Huntingdon last term.
The handicapper has been kind by dropping him 8lbs for three eye-catching performances in top-class handicaps at Cheltenham this season, and it may be that the track doesn’t see him to the best effect. He is handicapped to have a say here and drops into a 0-130 from a Grade 3, so he is tough to ignore.

IMPULSIVE ONE – (1.50 Kempton, 1pt win – 6/1)
The value in this contest lies with IMPULSIVE ONE, who improved on all known figures at Musselburgh when scoring in a Listed Juvenile contest, and that could be down to the removal of the hood. He has been behind Knight Salute on two occasions (hood on) but has little to find with him and if the removal of the hood has and being held up has a positive effect, he could close the gap, and the prices dictate a small bet here.

ZANZA – (3.37 Kempton, 1pt win – 10/1)
This race has stacks and stacks of pace in it, so ZANZA shouldn’t be inconvenienced by his hold up tactics in this contest. The step up to 3m is long overdue after staying on stoutly in highly competitive contests this term.
The undulating track of Cheltenham may not see him to best effect in the jumping department, and the return to a flat track like Kempton will certainly help him. Every man and their dog knows this horse is fairly treated off this mark of 145, but the improvement could come for the step up to 3m for the first time. He has an ideal scenario to go well here.

RATH AN LUIR – (3.15 Newcastle, 1.5pts each-way – 16/1 bet365, 14/1 general)
Nine-year-olds have a great record in this contest (won five of the last six), and RATH AN LUIR is unexposed as a stayer, but the plan was always to go up in trip to extreme distances if I remember rightly – when he made his Chase debut at Carlisle taking the scalp of some useful rivals.
He beat the now 139 rated Alnadam and the now 140 rated Minella Trump on that occasion and then bolted up off his opening handicap mark over fences of 129 by ten lengths over one currently rated 127. He shaped in desperate need of his first outing for 399 days at Ayr when the race turned into a bit of a sprint catching him off guard, but he shaped nicely and looked as though he would come on for the run.
That was a good prep for this contest, and he returns to Newcastle, where he won his Novice Hurdle over 2m6f in good style. He was also a good second here in a Handicap Hurdle when even then, it looked like he needed a stiffer test. He is well-handicapped off this mark, and this trip should see him to the best effect for his 2016 winning trainer.
