HONNEUR D’AJONC (2.45 Wincanton, 1pt win, 4/1)
HONNEUR D’AJONC is a fast-improving four-year-old, and this drop back in trip looks a good move by connections given the speed he showed in defeat to Time To Tinker at Taunton on his penultimate start. It was another step forward last time when running out a good winner at the same venue and the switch to handicaps off the opening mark of 122 could see him thrown in. Chester Williams claims 3lbs to help his cause and this speed favouring track on good ground looks right up his street. This race looks like the natural path of progression for him and I expect another step forward on the back of a career-best effort.

STRONG GLANCE (2.45 Wincanton, 1pt win, 11/1)
I want to back another in here, though, and that’s STRONG GLANCE who I fancied on return at Wincanton last month, but he unseated at the first. He is easily forgiven and looks remarkably well treated on last season’s form, especially under this talented 7lb claimer who effectively sees him 1lb below his last winning mark. Since 2019 he has had just two handicap starts outside of Grade 3 company, and they yielded a victory and a second place, the latter off a handicap mark of 129 at Aintree in class 2 company. Today he is in a class 3 race for the first time off 120 (inclusive of the jockey claim), and he has a very good record fresh. He has kept some warm company, and this looks like the right spot for him.

JONY MAX (3,15 Wincanton, 2pts win NAP, 11/8)
This is not a deep race at all and JONY MAX gets a confident vote to go one better than his run here 49 days ago. The absence is a slight concern, but his form for the level is very strong and holds a few of today’s rivals. He bumped into a fellow improver here last time, which has seen the third and fourth both give it a boost by scoring next time out. His previous runner-up effort on handicap debut has seen the third win twice since and the fourth score next time out. At this level, finding form lines like that is like finding gold dust, so in the hope that the tongue-tie brings out even further improvement, he should take all the beating in this weak contest off three pounds higher.
