ASTROMAN – (1.25 Huntingdon, 1pt each-way – 13/2 bet365)
Planned Paradise was a super nap for this column a few weeks ago, only to be done on the line by an 80/1 chance, but the pair pulled well clear of anything else in the race, and the third has since bolted up by six lengths to give the form a boost. Still, I was ultimately disappointed with the run, and this looks deeper, so 2/1 doesn’t appeal.
ASTROMAN has been underestimated and returns to the scene of his excellent second to the 131 rated Robin’s Dream. The pair pulled a mile clear of anything else in the contest on that occasion, and the third is rated 101 (beaten 15 lengths), which suggest there could be mileage in this mark of 111, especially given he has only had four runs over hurdles. He is far less exposed than a lot of these, and his handicap debut at Fakenham was full of promise despite not handling the track.
He was the last one off the bridle, but the sharp bends saw him lose ground to the eventual winner, who is 2/2 at the track. This test should see him in a much better light, so he is the each-way offering.

DRASH ON RUBY – (1.52 Ffos Las, 1pt win – 5/2 generally)
A few in here catch the eye, notably the Evan Williams trained pair for last year’s winning trainer, but this is far easier than any assignment that DASH ON RUBY has faced to date, and she gets the vote to finally get her head in front.
She has been slightly disappointing with her finishing effort at times, but she has the best form in the race, and she returns to the scene of a good effort when a clear second to Williams’ useful mare, Current Mood rated 127. She faced a stiff task on her handicap debut, but the money came for her, and it would be no surprise to see her go off short again here. She represents a bit of value at the current 9/4, and everything looks right for her today.

STORM OVER – (19:00 Newcastle, 1pt win – 11/1 bet365)
It may pay to take a chance on STORM OVER at Newcastle, who has fallen to a very handy mark of 59 after a few poor performances this term but now returns to the scene of his last victory, which came in February last year. He scored here at Newcastle off a handicap mark of 73 in a good class 4 event and now runs off 59 in a class 6 race.
The angle here is the visor. Connections have had the cheek-pieces on since October 21, and they were left off at Southwell last time, and he showed a good deal more but was unable to get into the race from off the pace. The visor goes back on today (worn in that victory here last term), which could make all the difference.
A switch of headgear or a reapplication has seen him go well in the past, 1,3,0,6,3 – while the figures don’t look inspiring, they have all come in a better grade than this, and he has not been beaten far. He could be worth chancing at the odds in this poor race, with Grace McEntee claiming a further three pounds off his back.
