DESQUE DE L’ISLE (2.20 Ffos Las, 2pt win, 2/1)
Today’s sole selection is DESQUE DE L’ISLE, who returns to the scene of his last victory. Although seven pounds higher, he does take a drop back into class 4 company against some exposed rivals after shaping well in class 3 and class 2 company. He has shown enough to think he can defy this handicap mark and the presence of Charlie Deutsch is a positive. The ground will prove no issue, and he simply must go left-handed after hanging all over the Wincanton track last time out. He could turn out to be a horse to catch when fresh, given two of his three wins have come off a break, but he returns to a left-handed track for which his form figures read 13117 over fences. His record at this course reads 1 and 3, but the third saw him bump into a well-treated rival and hampered badly by a loose horse that saw him fail to recover. He looks a good bit of value today.

JUDGE EARLE (3.20 Ffos Las, 0.5pt e/w, 66/1)
This is a bit of a punt but JUDGE EARLE has fallen to a career-low handicap mark of 96 after running poorly twice on heavy ground on the back of a 887-day absence and today returns to a sounder surface for the first time. Both pieces of headgear have been removed today for the first time over fences since 2018 and he steps back up to 3m after running over 2m last time out. Jamie Moore makes the journey to Ffos Las for this his only ride of the day. He went well for a long way on his reapparance run here at Ffos Las in a Class 4 0-120 and today’s drop into a Class 5 0-100 could see him to better effect.

VINTAGE FIZZ (1.30 Newcastle, 1pt win, 4/1)
This is not a deep contest, so it may be worth chancing VINTAGE FIZZ who bumped into a useful type in Since Day One over course and distance last time, and ran with extreme credit given the saddle slipped in a well-run race. He finished off his race very strongly, and this sounder surface will certainly suit. The top two in the market are not progressing and they both drop back to 2m and they don’t set a very high standard despite their official ratings suggesting so. 9/2 or bigger looks a fair price.
