ROYAL ARCADE – (3.05 Ayr, 1pt win, 7/2)
I am happy to give a chance to ROYAL ARCADE, who should relish this testing ground and his run here in December represents good form in the context of this race. He has an unexposed profile, and it was no surprise to see him improve on his seasonal return form over course and distance when shaping as though he needed a run.
That first run of the season can be easily forgiven, and now he has been given a chance by the handicapper to race off the same mark despite the fourth giving the form a boost the next twice.
The drop in grade into a Class 4 against mainly exposed rivals – albeit in-form rivals – looks a positive to his chances, and he is the potential improver in the field. The consistent form of his rivals has pushed his price to a reasonable one, and he surely has more to offer yet.

SIR CHAUVELIN – (4.40 Newcastle, 1pt win, 10/1)
Resumption is feared given his progressive profile, but he is likely to be seen to best effect once tackling 1m6f plus, and this is a big step up in grade with his latest form somewhat suspect.
SIR CHAUVELIN had little go right for him over a trip too short against a potential Group performer last time, so that run is easily forgiven and in these calmer waters and back up in distance, there is reason for him to continue his fine record over this course and distance (3-4).
He sits on a fair handicap mark on the balance of his form, and the twice he has run here this term over course and distance has resulted in two good victories. He is a thoroughly consistent horse and should be making his presence felt, and the 8/1 at the time of writing is too big.

ALASKAN JEWEL – (6.45 Newcastle, 1pt win, 10/3)
This could come down to the two at the top of the market in ALASKAN JEWEL and Dusky Prince with preference for the former. She did remarkably well off a steady pace at Wolverhampton last time. She was poorly positioned to make a challenge but showed an excellent attitude to squeeze through a gap and put the race to bed in a comfortable style.
That was her first run as a three-year-old, and the manner of her performance was fairly taking. She needs another step forward again today, but this straight track should see her in an even better light.
She had been quite threatening on the turf last term, but she looks one to follow on the all-weather with a record reading 231, and her debut form at this course reads extremely well in the context of this race. She has plenty of improvement to come and gets the vote.
