Horse Racing Tips - Daryl Carter's Best Bets on Tuesday, January 11

Doncaster and Exeter play host to the jumps on Tuesday and Daryl Carter is not messing around. He has a bumper six selections for a great day’s racing along with a new customer sign-up at Sky Bet, who are offering £20 In Free Bets when you bet £5.

odds correct as of Monday evening.

ILLEGAL MODEL (12:50 Exeter, 1pt win 5/1)

This is a competitive contest, but Fuji Flight has to be taken on at the top of the market given his tendency to jump out to the left and although I am a big fan of Coeur Serein, he doesn’t look to have too much in hand off this mark of 141. That leaves ILLEGAL MODEL, who was unfortunate to have been forced to unseat on seasonal/chase debut at Kelso but has some promising staying handicap hurdle form that makes him look on a very workable mark now chasing. Fences were always going to be his game given his size, and he is best when the ground is testing. This stiff track should suit and he is unexposed. He should be playing a part in the finish here.

GEORGES SAINT (1:20 Exeter, 2.5pt win 10/3)

I thought the best bet on the Exeter card was GEORGES SAINT who shaped with a good deal of promise on stable/seasonal debut at Haydock in what looks like a novice hurdle to follow. He was given an easy time of things in the closing stages, but ran down the leaders with the minimum of fuss. He could be thrown in off this opening handicap mark of 119 with improvement very much expected now race fit. He jumps well and has a very useful turn of foot. This extra two furlongs and stiff track will see him to good effect and he looks overpriced. He is favoured over Kissesforkatie, who goes back in against the

boys and must give away plenty of weight.

ERNE RIVER (1:40 Doncaster, 1pt win 6/1)

ERNE RIVER is overpriced if double figures across the board. He steps up in grade today and makes his chase debut, but the manner of his victory at Warwick, when last seen in May, was so authoritative he remains one to keep on side. He has been off the track for a while, but his point to point form when beating Minella Drama (144) looks very strong, which makes his handicap mark of 127 look very workable. He has barely broken a sweat in two novice hurdles, winning in good time figures and by eight and five lengths. He was bought for chasing, so it’s no surprise to see the relatively quick switch to fences. He could take some catching off the front here, and this race is full of horses that are not progressing.

MUSICAL SLAVE (2:30 Exeter, 1pt e/w 15/2)

A chance is taken on MUSICAL SLAVE, who has contested races at the Punchestown Festival, Cheltenham Festival and two Listed contests in his last four starts. His run before that saw him outpaced over 2 1/2 miles but beaten just three lengths by Clondaw Castle, a subsequent Grade 3 winner rated 160. This is a drop into calmer waters today and he makes his seasonal return after a wind operation. He has fallen 9lb in the weights off the back of those runs and back to his last winning handicap mark, which came here at Exeter in easy fashion. Those components could be enough to see him get back to winning ways and he does have a fair record fresh.

THE MACON LUGNATIC (2:50 Doncaster, 1pt win 5/1)

THE MACON LUGNATIC was still travelling well on his penultimate start here at Doncaster before taking a fall and it’s no coincidence that all of his best runs have come at this venue, so a return should see him to better effect than at Newbury latest. This represents a drop back into Class 4 company, and he is now off a career-low handicap mark. Connections of Muckamore tend to stick Sam Twiston-Davies on their horses when they feel they have a chance, and a bounce back to his best form would see him in the frame, while Quick Draw is worth another go back over fences after chasing home a well-handicapped rival last time.

KNOWN (3:20 Doncaster, 1pt each-way, 16/1)

I am rather surprised at the price of KNOWN who can easily be forgiven his seasonal return at Aintree when shaping as though he needed the run after a 249-day break, but he travelled strongly to a point. That was his first start over 3m and today’s drop back in trip looks a good move.

Outside of that run he has some very strong form for one being rated as lowly as 113. He was better than the bare result at Warwick on his penultimate start when runner-up to Java Point (120) in a maiden hurdle, and his two final runs for Nicky Henderson in handicaps both saw him finish third.

The first of those handicap runs was behind Corri Lindo (a soft ground Leicester course specialist) and A Distant Place (a well-handicapped horse off 123) and a seven lengths third to the 135 rated Fifty Ball and 131 rated Straw Fan Jack at Ascot after a 290-day break. This is far easier on paper than even his latest assignment, and he looks a sure-fire improver today.
