GUSTAVIAN looks to have excellent claims in this opening contest at Exeter, and the step up in trip is a further source of improvement. He arrives after an unlucky second behind our selection at Chepstow, and off the same mark today, he looks like a winner in waiting, providing a clear round.
He represents a bit of value at the top of this market, and this track will hold no fears. He did remarkably well to recover from a big error at Chepstow in which many would have pulled up and closed all the way to the line. That marks him down as a strong stayer, and stiffer tasks than this will await down the line.

MISS FAIRFAX – )1.40 Exeter, 1pt win – 6/5)
MISS FAIRFAX has shown more than enough in her four starts to think she can land a Maiden hurdle, and this looks like a very good opportunity for her to get off the mark.
The step up to 3m today for the first time should see her take a good step forward, but her recent form is more than enough to see her play a strong hand in this weak event today. She bumped into two subsequent winners at Leicester and Ludlow the last twice, and although Eureka Creek should give her something to think about, she really ought to be tough to beat here.

SEVENTEEN O FOUR – (2.40 Exeter, 1pt win – 9/4)
SEVENTEEN O FOUR is the least exposed in this field and arrives on the up after two good efforts over hurdles, and his form looks rather strong.
He caught the eye on debut when not overly stretched to chase home the smart Ree Okka (128) when doing best of those from the rear of the field. The second and third from that race both look fairly useful horses, and his latest effort confirmed he could be some way ahead of the handicapper on this handicap debut.
This is not a great race, and a prominent ride around here at Exeter will see him very hard to catch. Money will likely come for one or two in the hope of them bouncing back to form, Manvers House in particular, but there’s a reason they tried three miles for that one.

GETALEAD – (3.25 Newcastle, 1pt win – 11/2)
GETALEAD was outpaced at Taunton and stuck to the task strongly in the closing stages, suggesting that he would benefit from a step up in trip to 3m. This new trip could see him continue his progression after an already flourishing season, and the drop back into Class 4 company will help.
He was strong at the finish when winning over 2m5f at Ascot, so there is reason to think he will see out this 3m at Newcastle and the more the ground dry’s out, the better his chances. Kauto D’Amour shouldn’t be written off back here at Newcastle, and he can follow him home.
