MEHMENTO – (19:00 Newcaste, 1pt win – 3/1)
MEHMENTO doesn’t come off best at the weights here, but he is a progressive four-year-old that is on an upward curve, and the drop back to 6f for the first time looks a big positive to his chances and on breeding should bring out a good bit of improvement. Plenty of times last season as a three-year-old he shaped as though dropping back in trip would be a huge benefit to him and he is highly likely to get his own way out in front today.
Venturous is a false favourite here with his excellent four for seven record all coming over trips of 5f. At the same time, Judicial might not get a pace collapse that usually sees him to best effect, and Ex Gratia has a big task on her hands. Mehmento will likely prove a sprinter going forward after being caught late on over 7f on multiple occasions last term, and with an aggressive ride highly likely, he could take plenty of catching here with first run on his rivals.
Archie Watson has booked Hollie Doyle, for which the pair have a 20% strike rate, and he has made the long journey to Newcastle for one runner, so there’s plenty in his favour today.
