TWEED SKIRT (12:45 Newbury, 1pt win 15/8)
This is not a deep race and TWEED SKIRT showed the benefit of a return run at Uttoxeter when jumping immaculately well at Ascot to run out a ready winner in a good three-runner affair that recorded a good time figure. That performance sets the standard here and she is on the upgrade, so there’s no reason to oppose her. Swincombe Fleet held on under a good front running ride by Aidan Coleman at Exeter, but it was in the balance for a long way, and she could prove vulnerable. Speech Bubble was a useful bumper horse, but her jumping was terrible on hurdle debut, and she won’t be able to afford that luxury here.

BENNY’S BRIDGE (1:50 Newbury, 1pt win 7/1)
Amarillo Sky is very much respected here, but BENNY’S BRIDGE caught the eye with a promising debut over fences behind Thyme White despite a big blunder at five out and being keen in the early part of the race. Today sees plenty of pace in the race, which will suit his hold up style of running, and he sits on a very fair handicap mark of 122. He should be making his presence felt in this company off this lowly weight, and he has given firm indications that he is about to run back into form.

MASCAT (2:25 Newbury, 1pt e/w 10/1)
MASCAT ran as well as could be expected under a penalty against a very promising mare of Paul Nicholls’, but that trip ultimately stretched him and given he was an 87 rated flat horse running over 1m2f max, the drop back in trip to 2m looks a good move. He has been given a very workable handicap mark of 113 for this handicap debut, and Thomas Doggrell’s seven pounds claim makes him very interesting effectively off 106. He put in a very good debut performance to win as he liked at Wincanton, and it’s still very early days with him, so better can be expected. It would be highly disappointing if he was not at least in the frame in this contest.
