Thursday’s racing sees Listed action for racing fans to enjoy in Great Britain and Ireland. Those contests come from Huntingdon, though there are competitive cards at five different tracks on the day.
From those two Listed races, as well as at Doncaster, Joe Napier gives our Lucky 15 best bets for Thursday.
Huntingdon Racing Tips (Thursday 5 February)
Huntingdon’s Thursday meeting is one of their flagship events of the season. It is in the two Listed races that our lucky 15 tips run at the track during the afternoon.
2.00 Huntingdon – All The Glory (1pt win – 9/1)
Paggane has been a real success story for Faye Bramley this season and she might simply outclass these rivals. However, she meets soft ground in Britain for the first time having recently excelled under rules on good. As such, a chance is taken on All The Glory, who is talented on her day and might peak soon. Having reached a high mark of 135 last term over hurdles when third in the Scottish County Hurdle, she lost her way, including finishing last on her first three chase starts.
However, having fallen down the handicap, she was very competitive again at Windsor last time out. At 40/1, she finished third when overhauled late on having been mentored between the last two fences by Jonjo O’Neill Jr. She will have learned a lot for that experience, with O’Neill keen to see off the race rather than be overly aggressive and that step back in the right direction may well precede a bold bid.
3.10 Huntingdon – Act Of Innocence (1pt win – 11/10)
It is a surprise that Act Of Innocence trades at odds against to confirm form with main market rival Sinnatra in the Listed Sidney Banks Memorial Novices’ Hurdle as Nicky Henderson’s charge beat Dan Skelton’s with a measure of authority at Newbury in November. The six-year-old scored by a shade under three lengths, seeing the race out far stronger than Sinnatra. He was turned over at short odds at the same track next time out, but that was on good ground over 2m½f when outsprinted by a sprightly young opponent, whereas the selection shapes as though he will prove a middle distance horse at least.
Henderson pulled him out of a Graded engagement at Cheltenham on Trials Day on soft, but that was likely due to other circumstances rather than serious fears about the ground, which he has won on, and should win again on here, especially with the step up in trip likely to suit.
Doncaster Racing Tips (Thursday 5 February)
Seven races will be run on Town Moor on Thursday afternoon. Out two selections run in a pair of competitive handicaps.
2.25 Doncaster – Storming George (1pt win – 9/4)
I’m A Lumberjack has now failed to see his race out over both 3m and 2m4f this season, which suggests it is attitude rather than stamina which is holding him back. He is opposed with the year-younger Storming George, who was outclassed in a Grade 1 at Aintree on Boxing Day, but had looked promising previously. Neil King’s runner won on his bumper debut in a competitive 16-runner affair last January before finishing fifth in Grade 2 company at Aintree.
However, his hurdling efforts suggested he was moving even quicker in the right direction, finishing third to a useful yardstick on his timber bow at Newbury, then winning by 12 lengths at this track later that month. His effort in a Grade 1 is easy enough to forgive against some very talented rivals and with the soft likelier to be more prevalent than the good on Town Moor on Thursday, he should be at home on the racing surface. He may well be able to concede 2lb to his major market rival.
3.35 Doncaster – Gentleman Bill (1pt win – )
Top-weight Gentleman Bill ran some smart races over hurdles and there have been hints of him reaching a similar or higher level over fences. The eight-year-old has twice finished third in class 3 company this term, the first of those coming behind a horse who is now rated 20lb higher, while his most recent third came behind a winner who has run well again since too.
He made a bad mistake early on at Haydock prior to that, so that run is forgiven. He saw out his race promisingly at Wetherby last time out to suggest another extra furlong can be taken in his stride back at a track he won at over hurdles.
