Five horse racing fixtures take place on a cracking day’s action on Thursday 22 January, with the feature race of the day being the Thyestes Handicap Chase at Gowran Park.
Our resident tipster Andrew Mount is here with his best bets of the day, and he has a selection at Huntingdon, two picks in the Thyestes at Gowran Park and a solitary tip at Newcastle this evening
Huntingdon Racing Tips (Thursday 22 January 2026)
Seven races make up Huntingdon’s Jumps card, but you have to wait until the 2.40pm race for Andrew’s best bet of the day as he takes a chance on a big-priced contender for Fergal O’Brien.
2.40 Huntingdon – Can’t Resist It (0.5pt e/w – 16/1 bet365, five places, 14/1 generally)
Can’t Resist It finished a creditable 125-1 fifth of ten behind Old Park Star (winner again since and currently favourite for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle) at Cheltenham last month and it’s worth taking a chance on his stamina now that he makes his handicap hurdle debut. The Fergal O’Brien-trained seven-year-old has jumped out to his right on occasions and his two runs in this direction for his current yard have produced a Huntingdon third behind Moon Chime and Jour d’Evasion (now rated 129 and 132) respectively) and a one-length second to the odds-on Dan Skelton-trained Ittack Blue at Market Rasen. He also ran well this way round on occasions in Ireland, most notably when runner-up in a Fairyhouse bumper and with luck, he’ll steer a wide course on what should be better ground, as most of his yard’s runners are prone to do.
Gowran Park Racing Tips (Thursday 22 January 2026)
It’s a midweek treat on Irish shores as Thyestes day lights up Gowran Park and Andrew Mount has a brace of tips in the big staying handicap chase which could throw up a potential Grand National contender.
3.30 Gowran Park – Intense Raffles (1pt e/w – 8/1 William Hill, 15/2 bet365, both paying five places) & Answer To Kayf (0.5pt e/w – 7/1 William Hill, 13/2 bet365)
Intense Raffles lines up in the Thyestes Chase on the back of three modest efforts this season but he’s had excuses. Thomas Gibney’s eight-year-old, winner of the 2024 Irish Grand National over 3m5f on heavy going, understandably found 2m5f on the short side when third to Il Etait Temps in Grade 2 company at Clonmel on his reappearance and didn’t appreciate left-handed tracks the next twice – finishing a 50-1 eighth of 24 to Panic Attack at Newbury before pulling up in the Welsh National at Chepstow where the fast ground was also against him. Since arriving in Ireland from France, his five runs on left-handed tracks have produced form figures of 90P8P (0-5), beating only 31% of his rivals, whereas his record right-handed stands at 11123 (3-5), beating 82.7% of his opponents. Today’s desperate going won’t be an issue and the return to a right-handed track can spark a revival.
I want to save on Answer To Kayf, whose record on going judged to be very heavy, extremely heavy, bottomless or extremely bottomless by Proform (a going adjustment of -8.0 or lower) reads 13111 (4-5), with the defeat by just over one length when a best-of-the-closers third in a Grade 2 hurdle at Limerick. Terence O’Brien’s lightly-raced ten-year-old has a good record when fresh and has been rested for 67 days since his reappearance success on heavy ground at Navan in mid-November.
Newcastle Racing Tips (Thursday 22 January 2026)
Beginning at 3.55pm and going right through until 7.00pm, Newcastle host some competitive all-weather action and Andrew heads to the 6.30pm race for his nap on the card.
6.30 Newcastle – Vantheman (1pt win – 7/4 bet365)
The absence of any headwind saw front-runners/prominent racers take all eight races at Newcastle on Tuesday and with a tailwind rather than a cross wind forecast tonight, it’s going to be difficult to come from off the pace. Vantheman was always prominent on the unfavoured part of the track when fifth of 18 at York in October when we last saw him, finishing fifth of 18 to Dan Tucker and doing best of his group. Kevin Ryan’s five-year-old was a two-length course and distance scorer in May 2024 on his sole previous all-weather outing and tonight’s small field will suit – he’s lost all 12 starts in fields of ten or more runners but his record in single-digit line-ups reads 3111542 (3-7). His course win came on the back of a break, and his stable is in good form.
