Huntingdon & Southwell Racing Tips - Andrew Mount's Best Bets for Thursday 5 February

Huntingdon & Southwell Racing Tips - Andrew Mount's Best Bets for Thursday 5 February

Naps table leader Andrew Mount looks to land more winners on Thursday 5 February with three selections running today.

He heads to Huntingdon‘s National Hunt card for one selection, whilst he has a brace of selections at Southwell‘s all-weather fixture this evening.

Huntingdon Racing Tips (Thursday 5 February 2026)

There are seven races taking place at Huntingdon’s quality card and Andrew has an eye-catching pick in the 1.25pm 2m 3f 189y handicap chase.

1.25 Huntingdon – Malfoy Manor (1pt win – 4/1 bet365, 7/2 generally)

Dan Skelton, like his mentor Paul Nicholls, has a good record when using cheekpieces on a chaser for the first time. He’s won with 22 of the 110 qualifiers (20% strike-rate) for a profit of £23.49 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 19.88, A/E = 1.11).  The value lies with those who finished out of the frame (i.e. fifth or worse) on their latest outing, with 13 winners from 48 bets (27.1%) for a profit of £57.25 (expected winners = 7.61, A/E = 1.71).

This season, Skelton is three from five on this angle, with the winners at 18-1, 9-2 (Little Wren, tipped in this column) and 7-2 (the beaten horses, who both started at 25-1, were fourth and pulled up). Today, Malfoy Manor bids to make it four rom six in this 2m4f handicap chase.

The seven-year-old was sent off as the 5-2 favourite on his stable debut at Fontwell in November, trailing home 39 lengths behind the winner in eighth place but reportedly suffered from a breathing problem and has a win operation shortly afterwards.

The 3m trip was probably to blame for his modest sixth at Warwick next time and he’s worth another chance now back in trip with the first-time cheekpieces on.

Southwell Racing Tips (Thursday 5 February 2026)

A whopping nine races make up Southwell’s all-weather fixture, with the action getting underway at 3.50pm and going right the way through until 8.00pm. It’s the latter part of the meeting that has caught Andrew’s eye with tips in the 7.00pm and 8.00pm races.

7.00 Southwell – Aisling Oscar (1pt win – 2/1 William Hill, 15/8 generally)

Tim Easterby has a very modest record with last time out winners and I’m keen to oppose his Marry The Night in this 1m handicap. The obvious alternative is Aisling Oscar who took his record since his debut for Adrian Keatley to 1111111 (7-7) when scoring over 7f at Newcastle on January 22nd.

He has another 6lb rise to contend with but the Proform speed figure he recorded for that effort suggests that he has a huge edge over today’s opponents and he’s likely to prove hard to beat, even though switching from Newcastle straight course – the scene of those seven wins.

8.00 Southwell – Rogue Officer (0.5pt e/w – 33/1 bet365, four places, 25/1 generally with the other firms paying four places)

Stall 1 isn’t ideal for Rogue Officer in this 7f handicap, but I still want a small each-way interest at a big price on Antony Brittain’s four-year-old. Runner-up in two of his three handicap starts for Peter Chapple-Hyam, the son of Soldier’s Call was sent off at 50-1 on his stable debut at Newcastle 16 days ago where he finished ninth of ten behind the prolific Aisling Oscar.

That run would have been needed and, given that his patient running style was at a huge disadvantage that day, his 11-length defeat was worthy of an upgrade. His in-form handler does well in January/February with horses on that back of a recent outing and he could surprise.
