Excellent Review

The Irish 2,000 Guineas has seen some serious horses taking the spoil over the years and it’s a showcase for so many 2yo stars. While there have been plenty of short, priced winners, there have been some double figure priced winners so I’m going to look at the last 10 running’s to try and work out who adds their name this weekend.

  • ALL of the last 10 winners were priced 11/2 or shorter on their last start
  • ALL of the last 10 winners had run at least 4 times prior
  • 8 of the last 10 winners had raced as a 3yo and inside the last 28 days
  • 8 of the last 10 winners placed top 2 last time out (5 had won)
  • 8 of the last 10 winners raced at 7f or a mile last time out
  • 8 of the last 10 winners had run at The Curragh
  • 7 of the last 10 winners had won a Group race as a 2yo
  • 7 of the last 10 winners were rated 112+

Verdict

Smaller field with 5 day declarations available and both Henry Longfellow & Haatem have trend based and form chances, however both failed to place top 2 last time out leaving us with a sole recommendation in the shape of ROSALLION.

Both Kingman and Native Trail were runners-up in the English 2,000 Guineas before going to taste success here and the same could be true of Rosallion. Richard Hannon has confirmed he will send both he and Haatem to this race but also sighted a step up in trip being on the cards for the latter going forward.

His effort in that 2,000 Guineas was a career best and while the majority of winners have raced at The Curragh beforehand, all but one was Irish trained so Rosallion being run on this side of the Irish sea should not be looked at in a negative light.

Having raced on a different course in each of his starts to date you would be comfortable that he handles any track, and the fact he picked up a Group 1 in France as a 2yo would confirm that he travels well too.

It certainly looks to be a renewal where one of the more obvious candidates will land the spoils however I’d be pretty confident that Rosallion comes in here with form to suggest he is the best of this bunch and I fully expect him to prove that on Saturday.
