1.50 Goodwood – Coral Daily Rewards Shaker Handicap

Ready preference in the opener on Wednesday is for FRENCH DUKE, who looks bet of the week potential. Everything he has demonstrated on a course this year has looked positive for the future and he should be winning soon off his current mark even if it is not this day.

Roger Varian’s charge bubbled under at two in novice company, but returned with an eyecatching effort at Newbury over 1m2f. Having raced keenly and pulled Silvestre De Sousa into a clear lead, he looked like being swallowed by the field halfway up the straight. However, he rallied to be beaten just a short head, and was then sixth at Royal Ascot despite trying to take William Buick’s arms off too.

He dragged himself through the field with Buick trying to cling on despite a wide berth, yet still challenged inside the final two furlongs. The form has taken a couple of knocks, but he was value for better. A hood goes on to try and settle him and he has a draw to get him in behind runners, all of which should provide a benefit.

2.25 Goodwood – Visit Qatar Oak Tree Stakes (Group 3)

Three-year-olds have won the last two renewals of this filly/mare only Group 3, including providing the first five home a year ago. There are some potentially useful operators among that age group this year, with Group 1 runner-up Jabaara atop the market, but there could be an improving type worth chancing here in the shape of STOP THE CAVALRY.

Ralph Beckett continues to have his runners in fine order, and this daughter of Lope De Vega has now won two of her three career starts. Her two efforts as a juvenile do not count for as much as her recent effort at Chester though, where she overcame stall nine of ten on that nuanced track to win in fine style off top-weight against the boys.

She has never raced on quicker than good-to-soft, but on pedigree that is not an issue, while the step up to 7f should also be of benefit to her. She now possesses a rating which suggests she is on the cusp of races such as these, but she may be prepared for this level already.

3.00 Goodwood – Jaeger-Lecoultre Molecomb Stakes (Group 3)

Though this could prove a burn-up given the big field, short trip and downhill start, there is still a fair chance that MR LIGHTSIDE has the ability to follow stablemate Big Evs by making all to win this contest. Mick Appleby runs two, including Big Mojo in the same colours as their more vaunted neighbour, but the selection looks far more prepared to score here.

He has broken very sharply at both Redcar and Nottingham en route to winning both races. The former was a decent performance, but he defeated a Godolphin runner under a penalty in the latter, and that rival has won since. He will face greater challenge for the lead here against more serious opposition, but he may simply be too quick out of the gates for any of the other front-runners to live with him, and he can maintain that lead right to the finish.

3.35 Goodwood – Qatar Sussex Stakes (Group 1)

The Classic generation are probably represented by their three best milers here, at least among the colts. Rosallion has vaulted to the top of their pecking order after his Irish 2000 Guineas and St James’s Palace wins, though he was closely pursued by Henry Longfellow when claiming the latter.

There is also a chance that Notable Speech, the Newmarket Guineas winner, is slightly overlooked by virtue of his Ascot flop. However, the value here is with the best of the older contenders in French raider FACTEUR CHEVAL. He is potentially bound to show much better here in a similar way to compatriot Goliath did in the King George on Saturday.

Jerome Reynier’s charge won the Group 1 Dubai Turf to break through at the top level earlier this year. That was a clear improvement on anything he had shown previously and his sixth in the Queen Anne at the royal meeting can be ignored given he and fellow French raider Big Rock raced alone.

That he still managed to beat more rivals than he lost to is a massive factor in upgrading that performance. He was runner-up to Paddington a year ago, but quicker ground may actually be a plus for him, and he should not be underestimated even in the face of a strong younger challenge.
