It’s day two of the Cambridgeshire Meeting on Friday 27th September and there are three Group races and a Listed event taking place at Newmarket in front of the ITV Racing cameras. Our in-house tipster Steve Chambers takes a look at the live terrestrial action and picks out his best bets of the day…
1:50pm Newmarket – Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai British EBF Rosemary Stakes
A fine third in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot earlier in the season, DOOM will attempt to replicate that Group 2 performance in Listed company on Friday in the 1:50pm Rosemary Stakes. The William Haggas-trained daughter of Dubawi was last seen finishing sixth in a Group 3 event at Doncaster, but will enjoy the drop in class for this event.
She lacked a turn of foot that day over seven furlongs, so the step back up to a mile here should bring on some notable improvement. The likes of Sirona and Spiritual will be notable rivals, but Doom has shown she can deliver the goods at a higher level, so has to be given the utmost respect here.

2:25pm Newmarket – Princess Royal Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Stakes
A runaway four-and-a-quarter length winner of this race 12 months ago, TIME LOCK is back to retain her crown, but the Harry Charlton-trained mare failed to kick on from that dominant win and has not got her head in front since. Down the field in a brace of Group 1 events since that success, the five-year-old ran a better race last time out when third in the Princess Of Wales’s Stakes.
If she can build on that effort then she showed last year that on her day she’s a really classy performer and it’s hard to take her with that in mind. Place Of Safety and Mistral Star are improvers and have to be considered, but Time Lock is the class of the field and can show that at 2:25pm.
3:35pm Newmarket – Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Joel Stakes
Fourth in a Leopardstown Group 2 two weeks ago, POKER FACE is making a quick reappearance in the Joel Stakes at 3:35pm and Simon & Ed Crisford’s star can bounce back to winning ways here. He is one that has won Group races in soft ground and if the rain does hit Newmarket badly in the coming 24 hours then he could have very favourable ground conditions.
He was beaten by Ice Max in the Celebration Mile at Goodwood earlier in the campaign, but he can reverse that form, while Lead Artist is another notable danger and Poker Face does have to give 4lbs away to him here. But, the Crisford raider has shown he can star at this sort of level and looks the value play in a trappy betting heat.
