It’s day two of Newmarket’s July Festival on Friday and there’s another star-studded afternoon of action that will take place at Flat HQ. Our in-house tipster Steve Chambers has taken a look at the form guides and picked out his best bets across the card…
1:50pm Newmarket – bet365 Handicap
There’s a competitive 1m 2f handicap to kick off the action at Newmarket and the likes of Royal Power and Chantilly look leading contenders for the event. The former was third in a Listed event at Goodwood, so is interesting back in handicap company, while Chantilly is looking to bounce back from a disappointing run at Royal Ascot.
One at a huge price that could run well is Andrew Balding’s BREAK THE BANK, who was last seen finishing fourth at Sandown. The Invincible Spirit gelding will need to settle better in this contest. but showed when winning at Kempton earlier this season that he has some ability and he could be the value each-way play in a competitive curtain-raiser.

Wed 10 Jul 20242:25pm Newmarket – Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes
Aidan O’Brien’s HEAVENS GATE was no match for stablemate Fairy Godmother in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot, but the Ballydoyle two-year-old was a fine third in that contest and the daughter of Churchill can build on that effort and claim victory in the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes at 2:25pm on Friday afternoon.
Prominent from the outset, she was beaten by two closers that day, but she is sure to benefit from that experience and she looked every bit capable of landing a Group race this season. Mountain Breeze was over two lengths behind her that day and she takes her chance here, but will struggle to reverse the form, while Mighty Eriu adds more depth to the contest.
3:00pm Newmarket – bet365 Trophy
Andrew Balding’s FAIRBANKS wasn’t disgraced when sixth in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot last month and the son of Nathaniel could relish the step up to 1m 6f for the bet365 Trophy at 3:00pm. He was second at Hamilton on his previous start over 1m 5f 16y, so stamina shouldn’t be an issue at all and whilst this is a competitive-looking affair again he could improve again.
Sir Michael Stoute’s Fox Journey failed to land any sort of blow in the Copper Horse Handicap at the Royal meeting, but is better than that, while Tides Of War is another lively player, but Fairbanks looks a solid selection in what is another cracking betting heat for punters.
