There’s a bumper eight-race card taking place in front of the ITV Racing cameras on Saturday afternoon, as Newmarket and York play host to quality action on the Flat. The Cesarewitch Handicap is the feature race of the day and our tipster Steve Chambers has a selection for that 2m 2f marathon, while he has three other picks across the afternoon…
1:50pm Newmarket – Palace Pier Zetland Stakes
Second on his first two starts, SHACKLETON finally broke his maiden tag at the third time of asking at the Curragh last time out and the Aidan O’Brien-trained son of Camelot can build on that maiden success with victory in the Group 3 Zetland Stakes at 1:50pm. Currently a 50/1 chance for next season’s Derby at Epsom, Shackleton is one that will benefit from the step up to 1m 2f here and looks one that could be capable of huge improvement the further he goes. Stablemate County Mayo is a lively adversary, while the likes of last-time-out winners Starzintheireyes and Dunamase have shown significant promise, but Shackleton can prove to be a cut above.

2:05pm York – Coral ‘Daily Rewards Shaker’ Handicap
It’s been over two years since HAVE SECRET got his head in front, but the four-year-old Richard Fahey-trained raider can finally get back to winning ways in a hugely competitive York 2:05pm contest. Last seen finishing fifth at Ayr off a mark of 89, he drops down 1lb to 88 and he has some decent form off that mark with a second at York back in June. He was beaten two lengths that day, but did show he can perform well on the Knavesmire and if he can emulate his run from two starts ago, where he was second at Chester off 89, then he has to be a huge runner.
2:40pm York – Coral Sprint Trophy Handicap
Richard Fahey’s STRIKE RED was a winner of this race back in 2022 and having shown he excels at York then he has the capabilities of scoring again in what is an ultra-competitive Coral Sprint Trophy Handicap at 2:40pm. The six-year-old is only rated 1lb higher than his win two years ago and he showed when finishing second to Elmonjed at York back in August that the Knavesmire is where he saves his best performances for. Tenth in the Ayr Gold Cup last time out, Fahey’s charge can use that as a springboard to glory here.

3:40pm Newmarket – Club Godolphin Cesarewitch Handicap
Irish-trained horses could dominate the Cesarewitch Handicap at 3:40pm and while most eyes will be on the Willie Mullins-trained favourite Sea Of Sands, the one that can score is Gordon Elliott’s NDAAWI. Second in the Galway Hurdle last time out, the five-year-old can relish a return to the level and showed with a competent win at the Curragh two starts ago that he can sparkle on the flat. Down the field in the Fred Winter at the Cheltenham Festival back in March, Ndaawi could be given a patient ride by Jamie Spencer in this event before quickening clear in the closing stages to hand the Cullentra House trainer his first win in this race.
