We may have Royal Ascot on the horizon, but there’s some competitive action in front of the ITV Racing cameras on Saturday afternoon from Sandown Park, Chester and York. Our in-house tipster Steve Chambers previews the action and picks out his best bets across the live terrestrial action.
2:25pm York – Sky Bet Proud To Support Macmillan Handicap
It’s over a year since he tasted victory, but WOVEN shaped with real promise last time out when finishing fourth at York and the Michael Dods-trained eight-year-old can build on that effort on Saturday and land victory in the hugely competitive 2:25pm contest.
Staying on eye-catchingly well over six furlongs that day, the experienced performer will relish the step up to seven furlongs on the Knavesmire and that could well bring on some improvement. He’s 4lbs higher than his last winning mark, but he is one that has run to a high level for the last few seasons and he looks more than capable of bagging this prize.

Matthew Sutcliffe’s Value Punts – Selections from Sandown and York on Saturday
The final weekend before Royal Ascot is a great chance to find some value selections. Matty Sutcliffe is on hand to point you towards four of those on the day, with his best value punts. 3:00pm York – Sky Bet Race To The Ebor Grand Cup Stakes
One of the leading trials for the Ebor Handicap later in the season, York’s 3:00pm has only attracted a disappointing field of six runners, but it looks a trappy betting heat for punters, however, there’s one contender that shines brightest.
Simon & Ed Crisford’s CHESSPIECE looked a real smart up-and-coming stayer last season when landing a Listed prize at Hamilton, but the Godolphin four-year-old failed to kick on and ran no race when last of six in the Henry II Stakes at Sandown last month. Dropping down in class for this event, the Crisford team reach for the blinkers for the first time and if the addition of headgear can bring on some improvement then he certainly has the ability to down the likes of Real Dream and Relentless Voyager.
3:35pm York – Churchill Tyres Supporting Macmillan Sprint Handicap
Tom Ward’s WOODHAY WONDER has been a revelation and the three-year-old filly bids for a fifth win in a row when lining up in the 3:35pm at York. The daughter of Tamayuz has racked up a four-timer at Newmarket over the last eight months, so it’s interesting to see whether she can continue to progress away from Flat HQ and land victory at York.
She was a neck winner last time out and will have a tougher test on Saturday, as she has to defy a 5lbs higher mark, but there’s no doubting that she continues to flourish and a mark of 98 may not be beyond her. A winner in three races with 15 or more runners in, Ward’s charge should have no issues with the big field here and she can continue to defy expectations and make it five on the spin.
