Race 1 – 1:20pm Goodwood – Coral Chesterfield Cup Handicap

The opening race is fully subscribed with 18 runners, but the favourite CASTLE COVE looks like getting punters off to a winning start. The four-year-old did not set the world alight last season in novice company, but after a gelding operation and 338 days off the track, he made a sparkling seasonal debut at Chester when winning a 12-runner handicap from the widest draw. That takes some doing on the Roodee, and he won by nearly two lengths, so an 8lb rise does not look overly harsh, while he should also be fine dealing with good ground.

Race 2 – 1.55pm Goodwood – Coral Vintage Stakes (Group 2)

Both Andab and Do Or Do Not look ready for this step up to 7f, with the former looking a particular danger. However, the last three times Aidan O’Brien has had the favourite in this race, he has won it and DORSET looks to boast considerable potential. He caught the eye when nearly chasing down an odds-on favourite and stablemate on his debut at the Curragh, then went one better at that same track next time out. That form is already working out well and he should prove versatile enough to win this without needing to make all.

Race 3 – 2.10pm Beverley – Lady Jane Bethell Memorial Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap

Blue Yonder arrives as the horse in form, but in fifth behind him last time out was APODICTIQUE, whose profile is most interesting here. He was beaten less than two lengths that day, gets a 3lb swing with the likely favourite, and his form when trained in France suggests he could well end up better than a mark of 59 for the Moores.

Race 4 – 2.30pm Goodwood – HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes (Group 2)

If able to recapture anything like the form which saw him blitz away with this 12 months ago then AUDIENCE will be very difficult to beat once again. There is uncertainty based on his recent form, but his only two starts over this 7f distance since have seen him miss the break, then be ridden with more restraint on return at Haydock, neither of which have suited. If getting out prominently again, this course and distance possibly suits him better than any other racetrack, so he should go close if on his best behaviour in first-time cheekpieces.

Race 5 – 2.45pm Beverley – All-Freight Limited 10th Anniversary Selling Handicap

This is a very weak contest and it may pay to side with PACO’S PRIDE, who has at least shown some placed form over this trip and on a similar surface. That came at Hamilton back in June, so while he has not been as good since, recent races of his came in stronger class 6 handicaps than this. None of the other older horses can claim any recent form and the three-year-olds are less proven, so he is the percentage play.

Race 6 – 3.05pm Goodwood – Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup (Group 1)

Illinois sets the standard on his Gold Cup second, but he is no Kyprios, and the fact he is joined by stablemate Scandinavia suggests there is some doubt about his qualities even within the Ballydoyle ranks. Scandinavia himself is a big danger after a superb display at Newmarket’s July meeting, but only Stradivarius has won this as a three-year-old since it became a Group 1 and FRENCH MASTER may best the pair. John & Thady Gosden’s charge has simply kept on improving since getting off the mark at Doncaster in July 2024 and his victory in the 1m6f Copper Horse Handicap at Royal Ascot was very taking from miles back in the field. He could have even more to offer over this 2m trip.

15:05 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes (Group 1)

Race 7 – 3.45pm Goodwood – Coral Golden Rewards Shaker Handicap

Redorange may well tick off a big handicap soon, as he has gone very close at Ascot the last twice without having the luck of the draw. That could be the case again here in stall 18 of 22, while there is also plenty of pace in this race. If anything, a closer may well be able to flourish and ENCHANTING looks to retain potential for Andrew Balding. She hacked up here in May, winning a 3-runner handicap over track and trip by nearly four lengths. A disappointing effort in Listed company since is foreign and another handicap success here off 11lb higher looks distinctly possible.
