3.00 Haydock – MUJTABA (1.5pt e/w – 12/1 generally)
MUJTABA would appear to be a quirky proposition based on his form this year. In four starts, he has been beaten by over 12 lengths on three occasions, but on the first two he was reappearing after 309 days, and then running over a 1m4f trip that surely stretched his stamina beyond its limit. He seems far better judged on his second to Hardwicke Stakes winner Isle Of Jura at Goodwood over this distance, with that collateral form looking very strong. He was subsequently too far back to get involved in the Listed Hampton Court Stakes at the royal meeting, but that race has proven a graveyard for those positioned out the back on the inside. The tongue tie utilised since September 2022 is removed, but that may simply aid his chances and in this smaller field, with the ground to suit, he may prove to be William Haggas’ number one chance ahead of more fancied stablemate Al Mubhir.
5.45 Lingfield – FRANKELIAN (1pt win – 11/2bet365)
The two favourites for this unusual maiden are likely to be Sir Mark Prescott’s Miss Cynthia, who was third at Listed level just two starts ago, and Godolphin’s Regal Connection. The former does not look a winner however, especially at this shorter trip than ideal, while the latter’s form thus far only looks mixed. FRANKELIAN is more exposed, but she has looked inconvenienced by the slightly more nuanced bends at Chester and Pontefract the last twice. Nevertheless, she could easily have finished closer in the Chester race, and this more conventional track and longer straight can help her balance. She has enough form to suggest she is a significant contender here.
