2.30 Leicester – MATAURI BAY (1.5pt win – 3/1 generally)
It is always tricky getting involved with juvenile maiden contests, with only Sick Note Britain having run in this six strong line-up. However, he showed little of interest and comes up against some big name stables and owners here. Juddmonte and Godolphin runners trained by Sir Michael Stoute and Charlie Appleby catch the immediate eye, but the hope is they take enough of the market away from a decent fancy in MATAURI BAY for Ralph Beckett. His dam won on debut, as did his American Grade 1 winning sister Aunt Pearl, and useful brother Dragon Icon for Roger Varian, the siblings having both done so in some style. There is therefore plenty of forwardness in his pedigree and close relations, so there can be confidence he will be ready to fire at the first time of asking.
3.00 Leicester – GOLDEN DUKE (1pt e/w – 10/1 bet365/Hills)
Leicester rides very differently if the ground is soft, so course and distance form is only trusted comfortably on a sounder surface. As such, High Violet is strongly feared, but a revival is worth chancing from GOLDEN DUKE. Since 2022, his form when his handicap mark has fallen into the 60s on good ground or quicker reads 2211, the first of those victories coming over course and distance off this exact rating of 68. He is also Hayley Turner’s only booked ride on the day, at a track she hasn’t yet visited in 2024, but four of her seven rides at the venue in 2023 finished in the first three. The son of Galileo Gold can make her trip a fruitful one.
